1100S Powder Coating Triple, Bars, Risers, and Headlight Bracket, which black???
«

There are SO many blacks to choose from. I have fine textured (7-13% gloss), but the look came out a bit too textured. I'd prefer something that is the same texture as what is on the stock powder coated parts. I've given up on the idea of matching the stock charcoal color, too hard.
Any suggestions from those that have done this?

Did satin show any texture or are the parts basically smooth now?

My PC'er does different levels of gloss and have really liked his 60% gloss.
Not too shiny and not too dull...
Here is a pic of the 60% on the headlight bezel:

Texture from parts comes from the chemical structure or the physical structure of the piece.
You can have texturized Powders that are matte or glossy, or you can have smooth powders that are satin. I use satin to refer to something that has low gloss. I am not sure if thats the correct meaning though.
The stock parts on the bike are not powdercoated by the way.

Ah, so that's why my Ducati parts guy said go to OSH and see what kind of rattle-can black matches the best!!!

Not exactly. Textures on metals comes from post processing of the parts, such as bead blasting, machining etc. The parts I'm talking about on the new Monster get their texture from a textured powder coat, which is another way to do it.

You are correct.

They very much ARE powder coated. The black/charcoal parts are coated with a textured charcoal and the silver parts (the ones I specifically was re-doing) are coated in a metallic colored, textured powder. I know because I removed this coating with both acetone and then sandblasting.
Anyway, I ended up going with a fine-textured 7-13% gloss black (basically a textured semi-gloss). Came out really nice!!! I'd be out riding my bike except I f*&king snapped my upper triple in two while pressing the rubber bushings back into it. Yes, I'm an idiot and did not follow proper pressing procedures.
I've got a new used triple on order and will have the bike back together within a couple weeks. This time I'm not going to bother to press out the bushings anyway, they took the heat just fine during a test run after I snapped the triple.

How hard was it to strip? Is this something powder coat shops will do?

most powder coat shops will have sand blasting equipment or send your parts out to be blasted. Blasting is recommended on any part that already has powder on it. However, you CAN powder coat over old powder coat, but there's a risk the coating underneath will fail. It doesn't always happen but it can.

I used a satin or semi-gloss and liked the results. Can't remember for sure, but I didn't like matte at all. I think it was semi-gloss.
