I have obviously missed the opportunity to post on the thread about the testing biker (locked now) ... nice comments Dez. But how can I possibly continue to take you lot seriously?

The guy does not appear to be wearing a single piece of ducati regalia ... he should most definitely have his bike confiscated for offences against the wankeristi ... what is he trying to do to our reputation?

How could you guys not have mentioned that?

It amazes me the uproar re the bloke texting on the bike (IDIOT yes!  Roll Eyes ), yet you see it happening in virtually 50% of vehicles every day!!  bang head bang head

Lets get stuck into the Rider yet again! Same ole, same ole!!  Roll Eyes

From the look of his attire I would bet that he is a transitional rider that once his mates sell their bikes for jet skis he will follow suit of course (Lemming), but leave the serious motorcycling community with his legacy!?  Roll Eyes

Ok, here's a question just a little left of field.

I was told that you can convert a normal (240v) hair dryer into a 12volt one.

So, most of you who know me, know that I am not blessed with a full head of hair and the reason that I'm asking this question is that a (old) truck that I drive does not have a heater and seeing that its starting to get a little cooler, well somebody told me that someone else has done just that.

SuzyJ, surely this is right up your alley??

I had an old Cruiser HJ45 and the heater/fan box would unbolt and looked like it would be really easy to mount as a retrofit.

Just tap into the trucks coolant lines, install a flow valve to control temp and wire in the fan to a switch mounted on the dash.

It would be safer and more durable than a hair drier.

Anything's possible.  If you just connected it to 12V, you'd get a little itty bit of heat, but the fan wouldn't work.

It would depend on how the heating coils in the specific hair dryer are connected.  If there are a number of them in series, then you could conceivably reconnect them in parallel to make the thing work at lower voltage.  Power works as the square of voltage divided by resistance, so if you halve the resistance, the voltage for a given power goes down by sqrt 2.

The long and the short of it is that if it's got 20 windings all connected in series, and you connect those 20 windings in parallel, you'll get the same power at 12V as you had at 240V.  Which is pretty unlikely.  And even then the fan wouldn't work, and you'd need really thick cable to hook it up to the battery, and the battery would go flat really quick.

The 12 to 240 V inverter is an idea, but for something like a hair dryer you'd need a really big one, capable of ~1200W continually.  That'd cost a lot more than the hair dryer.  And your battery would still go flat.

I'm sure plumbing a little oil cooler style radiator up to the coolant and putting a 12V fan on that would be the cheapest way to go.

Sorry I don't know how to link using an iDevice but I just read that speeding fines are set to rise 12.5% in NSW in the upcoming budget ... of course speeding fines are a necessary safety deterrent not a source of revenue.

Oh but they are being increased to cover a hole in the budget.

Don't forget the speed cameras there switching back on, 42 more new mobile speed cameras, and hundreds more red light cameras, being installed, all for your safety.
There only selling off the power stations to cover the  $800 million hole in the budget, or is it a canyon?   Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Shocked

Speeding fines are going up here in SA too - like Cheech and Chong said - things are tough all over
