I was making a new project with a tank.
I want my bike to be 100% carbonfibre , so the tank must be also.

Buying one is to expensive and making one is more fun.
I took a dark petrol tank and there we go!!!

The results are verry good!

Now i need to sand it for the last times and clear it.
The name must be put back on the tank but i am looking for the nicest one.

One of these names:

Here is the tank so far:

100% real carbonfibre! No sticker or other imitations.Just the real stuff!!

It appears you wrapped the stock steel tank?

peerke

Yes.
I wrapped it.

A tank with only carbon is not possble without prof stuff.
Carbon cant hold petrol.
You must mix it with something thats not for sale.
But you cant tell the difference with the one you can buy.

He Man

^ well....thats debatable. THere was someone who made it with home made stuff. Not hard, just a lot of work. He used a store bought chemical to seal it.

thought

could you theoretically use caswell to seal the inside of a full cf tank?

CF, epoxies, and supplies can be ordered from Aircraft Spruce.  West Marine also carries WEST system epoxies.  They can ship stuff to you.   Now that you got an apetite for the stuff, you can plan for the next winter project....

Congratulations, peerke.  I'm sure the bike is going to look great.   [thumbsup]

Be mindful that resins are sun sensitive and can discolor after a while when left in the sun.  There are some coatings you can apply once you finish wetsanding that will protect it.  Some marine varnishes provide very good protection.

Great job. This deserves to be enshrined in the Homemade mods thread :)
I own several motorcycles. I have owned lots of motorcycles. And have bolted and/or modified lots of crap to said motorcycles...

peerke

How do i do that?

The sanding takes a long time.
I'm sanding it with waterpaper and soft strokes.

I hope to be finished this weekend to clearcoat it.

Raux

I like it, and I wonder if it will be stronger to avoid the normal tank ding if it happens to fall over, not that I want you to test it.

But it's an idea. for those people with plastic tanks, maybe find a way to coat it on the outside with something that can deform a bit UNDER the harder exterior of the CF.

daftduc

how far are you going to be trying to take this 100% carbon fiber?  cf frame?  cf rims? cf engine casing?
Don't look at this.

peerke

I want to go for 100%.

Rims are to expensive , so must be a used set.Or a forged set alu wheels.

Frame i think its gonna be CF or white.
