I'm no Gixxer authority, but I think those are for a small piece of bodywork, goes ~ from the front of the tank to the steering head.

Is the fuel tank all actually a fuel tank, or is the front section the airbox cover?

If so, it could be something to do with that.

I think that's right.  It's the orange piece in this pic (the pic is a 2006 GSXR 750, but it's basically the same thing).
