Shift lights and tachs
«

I have a 2000 M900ie.
Last year, I started going to the track and, of course, had lots of fun.
I have hit the rev limiter on my M900ie a time or two and I thought about getting a shift light in order to help me avoid the instant shutdown.
When looking in to lights, there are many options. Lights, lights and tachs and light, tach and speedo.
Well, I thought I might replace my speedo and tach with an all-in-one speedo, tach that had a shift light (I thought it might be nice to actually know how fast I was going on the street). One that I like has bar graph for the tach (like newer Ducatis do). I have never ridden a bike with a bar graph style tach, just good ol' needles.
Thoughts?
Or is this like Coke or Pepsi?
Preference.
Here is what I got:

I'd just learn to listen to the motor. I'd hit the rev limiter on my 848 even though it had shift lights because I was too busy to pay attention to the dash. My 748 now doesn't have anything except a tach, which I very rarely look at. I just learned not to hit the limiter by sound.
You could also just put a piece of tape on your tach during track days so when the needle passes it you know to shift.
Just my $0.02. You could always buy something expensive as well.

My Trailtech Vapor has a two stage shift light built in that doubles as a temperature warning. I tend to like it because I have it programmed that I have exactly enough time under full acceleration once the yellow light comes on I can kick it into the next gear and the red light blips for just a second before the gear engages. Both are programmed well under fuel cut.
The nice part is that it is bright enough that I don't have to be paying attention to it for it to catch my eye. The bad news is that installing it was no small undertaking.

shiftlights, tachs, speedos.....none of these are to be used on the track. IMHO of course.
I have a shift light built in with my Vapor gauges....I dont even notice it on the track. Its just....I dont have time to be staring at a light waiting for it to light up!

fwiw, a good shift lift should be "viewable" in your periphery w/o having to stare at it.

Or connected directly to the skin via electrodes...

Okay, okay...I admit it; I have never bumped the limiter while on the track.
Probably, I am looking for something new for the Monster.
This Spring, I have hit the limiter a couple of times on the road and found it unsettling. I don't know why I am bumping into it now; perhaps I am just out of practice. I guess I need to ride more.
I do not look at my gauges while on the track, but this is not just a track bike. It is a road bike as well. I am not racing it, but that would be fun to do!
I like the tape idea and will give it a shot.
Something like this (my name isn't Stan and this is not my bike):

Sell the bike. Get a '98 Monster and then you don't have to deal with those pesky rev limiters.
