I called progressive to pay my insurance the other day and ended up getting a combined quote for a 2nd bike...turns out its DIRT cheap to run a 2nd bike (only $80 bucks a year!). So i fancyed my thoughts on CL with a 1978 Honda CB400 Hawk T2. My brother has been a big fan of riding after seeing this movie about that revolutionist Che Guevara but never really jumped into it. So I sent him a few pics of some old school bikes and he started looking on CL. One thing led to another and one day I was driving home with a CB400 in tow.
The guy wanted $500, but I managed to get it for $350. Cost was split between my brother and I. So in essence i sold an HID kit and picked up half a bike that doenst even run....
But I got her home and she sat in my garage till i started tinkering with her last night. I am going to completely strip her down and my brother will do all the fabbing and painting. Shes only got 9,000 miles on her (assuming thats right) and was recently inspected to run in 2009 in NYS. Clear title and all.
But so far the few things i have found out that are wrong
1) both throttle cables are snapped and will need to be replaced.
2) Key tumbler is also broken. one of the wires snapped, resoldered it. but jiggling the key will shut the power off
3) best part, there was a chopstick stuck in the fuel line from the petcock to the carbs. (no idea how this happened)
4) motor needs some gaskets repalced.
5) the previous owner stripped the seat down to the pan. I still have some fiberglass sheets left from a 999 fairing repair. I think i may copy the seat pan since its all rusted.
After i cleared the obstruction and cleaned the carbs, she fired up. but she is drinking gasoline and the plugs are fouling quickly. so the jetting needs to be redone.
But here she is. 38hp. they say its 55mpg city. We will see once i have her together again. down with gas prices!!! not looking to drop a boat load of money on her either.
