Author Topic: Caliper dust sheilds  (Read 2257 times)

So I'm looking at a post from Heman and I see these dust covers on the front calipers. I do remember that mine had these at one point, but they are no longer there. Is this a reason for concern?

if you are talking about the metal piece that is hed to the back of the calipers by the pad pins they are unneeded.  when removed they will allow the pads to be slightly freer and thus could reduce brake drag. bacon

Hey atomic, thanks for the tip.  I just removed the plates and the clips.  Replaced the clips with safetywire so the pins are secure and now I can clean that whole area better and easier. 

Just wait and see, I keep removing weight from my steed like this and I'll be able to catch that 140 mph 620 Capirex.

so no shit don't need it... removing allows a little more float and less friction on brakes...
hmmm... i need new pads soon anyway.

but i'm assuming that's with safety wiring the pins. the plates at as springs to keep tension on the pins so they dont move.

Yep, thats the piece. I know that the bike came with these shields, but lost them somewhere. I can now sleep better knowing that they are not needed.

Proper engineering practice, say for corrosive dust control, preventing pad vibration, helping keep the pins in place?

I just put the pins back in never lost one.  3 years of racing like this, no problems.  if you want even less drag and better brakes get a floater kit.  good bye drag bacon

Why did they?

I have replaced brake pads on other motorcycles that have had a cover over the pads and I have replaced brake pads on cars that have not had covers over the pads...
