So few weeks back I changed out the battery on my 696.  I was super busy and never got a chance to put the tank plastics back on.  Few weeks later, the tank covers still sit in my closet.  The more I look at the bike, the more I like the un-covered tank look.  Now I'm thinking about picking up a black or CF front fender to make the red frame even pop some more.  Is it a big risk to not have the mesh screen over the tank intake?

I endorse the all black/red frame look.

It just looks like you're missing something.

I like the cans you've got on there.

get yourself a set of CF side panels. or at least black if the red is too much for you. BUT no, don't think it's a good idea to run like you are, or a good look.

But it's your bike. and we all have opinions about our own bikes.

Ditch the airbox and run open filters- looks more open and you will be able to see through the "vents" and also through the trellis below and won't look like someone stole your tank covers...

+1  I think that might just work.  Would like to see how that looks too.

How it looks while keeping covers off or how it looks with the covers on...?

I've seen the new Monsters with pod filters and covers on.  I'd like to see what it would like with pod filters and covers off.

I'll snap a better pic when I go to re-install my ECU on my bike...

to the OP, i can see how that would grow on you.  it would probably grow on me too, but it would probably look better with a different skin rather  than nothing at all.

Ya, I like the black on red look too but that tank needs to be covered with something.
