my tank is metal and capacity is a tad under 4 gallons.  i'm getting about 20mpg at this rate - couldn't possibly be how i ride at that point.  but anyway, there are gears after 3rd?  how do you access them?

Just picked up my '07 S4RS and am curious to see what kind of mileage I'm getting on my daily commute.  Shouldn't take long to burn through a tank and I'll let y'all know.  I also am having problems accessing the gears beyond 3rd.  Is there an overdrive switch?  [cheeky]

i know it's no S4, but my s2r get's well over 40mpg, and i ride it pretty much wide open at all times. i'd say you have an issue.

My S2R 800 only get 76 before the light comes on.  This is also due custom fuel map inside her.  Not sure my wallet likes the new mod but my wrist DOES  [Dolph]
I think you have an issue too.  I am hard on my 800 and don't see the light come on until 110 - 130

ya, there's no question that there's an issue.  just the weirdest thing.  no leak, no fouled plugs, unless my neighbors are siphoning gas from me every night i really can't account for how terrible the mileage is.  i used to get over 150 miles per tank on my m900 and would regularly get over 130 on this bike before this started.  something no bueno.  i blame zee Arnold Schwarzenegger, if he didn't cheat this wouldn't be happening to my bike.

I just got 35 mpg on my S4R.

That's mixed riding with a heavy right wrist. Also bike has termi slip-on's and collector with DP lid and air filter, and pc3 with custom dyno tune. So fueling is almost spot on.

S4RS with full Termis and ECU.  First tank gone, light came on at 89 miles, immediately filled 2.9 gallons, 30 mpg or so.  That was mostly under 4th gear around town with some spirited blasts.  I think that's pretty average for a 4 Valver.  I'm sure in 6th at 75 it would be much better.

The best fuel economy example I've ever seen was on Top Gear.  PRIUS VS. M3:

I have a 2005 S4R and i was getting a little more than 40 MPG but that is a lot of 6th gear cruising though.  Still better then my RSV 1000.

04 s4r, purchased dec. 2003, always gets 40 - 45 mpg.

So you get it checked out yet?

Yeah Jesse, what ended up being the problem?

I can squeeze out ~120 with some good 6th gear cruising, but more like ~90 with the first 3 gears in the mountains.

speeddog is still investigating.  nothing obvious at this point.  we'll see . . .

My well tuned S4RS is getting anywhere between 35 & 40 MPG depending on how hard I'm punishing the old girl. For the most part I'm seeig numbers very close to 40.For comparison I'm running the DP ecu and full termi system. I suspect that you will find your problem had to do with the FI setup. Once I took my RS to the dealer for a little FI tuning. When I got the bike back she made gobs of power in the upper RPM range but was super rich everywhere else. I was also only getting about 25 mph.  It was then that I decided to buy a few tools and teach myself to tune Ducati FI. Turns out all the dealer did was crank up the trimmers 25 points.. DUH can't imagine why it was soo rich..

I'm sure you'll have it sorted out in short order

Cheers
Mike

just had it dynoed a few weeks ago.  fuel delivery looks/seems ok and the tweaking made her run like a lion.  running rich enough to offer 20mpg would be next to impossible as it would run like crap and be spewing black smoke i would imagine.
