Dilemma
«
on:
July 02, 2011, 09:50:12 AM »
A few months ago I joined a State Sportbike Forum. I mentioned my location and a young man started contacting me to ride with him in a couple of weeks. In his recent post to me, he mentioned he has been riding for 6 weeks, still has his temporary license and is about to get his full M certification on his license. He says he has ridden about 2000 miles in the last 6 weeks, has ridden 155 mph, can take curves at 110 and is trying to get his buddy "up to speed" to ride along. The guy is apparently in his early 20's.
This is obviously a recipe for disaster.
I know my 2000 750M (according to previous posts) goes at least 140 mph
Do I just cut off communication with this little firepisser or do I try to control the mayhem. I ride with a fairly extensive 1s Aid kit but I really don't want to use it if I don't have to. I am not real interested in pulling rider pieces out of the woods. I'm old and I don't have anything to prove to anyone.
Apparently, he does not have any gear either.
Thoughts?

I wouldn't be able to resist the challenge - teach him "the Pace" and some survival techniques.
If that doesn't work, make him do a track day and see if that triggers some modesty and a wish to learn.
Maybe start with a cup of coffee, let him talk about riding and take it from there.
My guess is that he's probably not as tough as he wants to appear.
If he really doesn't get it at all - wish him a nice ride and let him go his own way.

That's good guidance. I don't think I am really interested in riding with this guy due to all the entanglements if he does auger in while I'm along, but I have been known to stick my nose where it doesn't belong before.....

You don't say
Go for a ride with him, just keep your distance. See what happens. Somebody has to be there to call the medichopper.
If he's the douchebag that he appears to be, he'll get served whether you're along or not. You might as well be around for the entertainment.

I wouldn't go with him at all. I'd hate to be there when the idiot pulls a stunt that lands him in trouble.

I think I might e-mail him and tell him that he is far too much of a stud to ride with me - I'll only cramp his style. I'd like to have some small positive impact on this deal if I can though. Even though I have only met him on a forum, I really am not interested in hearing that he is smashed up or dead.

Not worth the time and energy. you could tell him about slowing down on the street or do a track day. But itsn not ur sresponsility to change him. Even if u try to, he will just think ur a chicken sh*t and a poser rider with a fancy Ducati. That is, unless u already ridewith a t-shirt and an iCON protective vest

I would stay away. I would tell him kindly that I'd prefer to not cross the line between
spririted riding and douche-baggery.
He's riding to impress, not my cup of tea.
Even if has has awesome skillz.
I envision someone like this on the wrong side of the double yellow one to many times, or wadded
up in a guardrail somewhere. Hope he surivives.

Tell him to stop watching Torque and similar shit...
It doesn't work on the REAL street! In reality there's not computer graphics and similar... Just enjoy the ride and take your ass back home after finish...

Why would you even consider riding with him? Chatted you up on a forum, brags about how risky he is, young and inexperienced... Sounds like an online dating chat room where the underage girl is really a 37 year old cop ready to throw you in jail. Recipe for disaster.

You could meet up with him and try to beat some sense into him. Explain he'll never get to be Nate's age if he doesn't slow down.

I e-mailed him today and told him that riding at the level he is riding at with his amount if experience, I would end up pulling his broken body out of a ditch.
I related a close call I had riding this morning where a guy looked right at me and pulled right out in front of me with a F250 pickup. If I had been riding on the edge, there is no way I could have avoided a pretty serious crash.
I told him he was going to do what he was going to do but to please consider being a bit smarter and living longer.
Hopefully I don't hear about him in the news.
