FYI,

I have an 09 696 with nearly 5,000 miles. I am the second owner and put on 4,000 miles in 1.5 seasons.

Both of my steering stops are pristine. Rub marks, but no chips or cracks.

To the OP: Take the advice about the Vacuum Plugs. Your bike will get chips and scratches. It adds character. If anyone asks, you put it there while passing Rossi on the outside and your glove scratched it when you flipped him off.

To Berg: Dude, chill. You're by and large a great poster. Have a beer, relax. Go club a baby seal. Whatever makes you feel better.

These 696ers get on here all day and circlejerk each other over how awesome their little bikes are and then piss and moan about completely minor things like painted steering tabs and cracks in wiring looms and broken zipties and the like. I mean really. I'm sure their fellow Starbucks patrons will not notice.

Really don't care for this generalization. I personally don't drink Starbucks, and have never come on here to whine about my 696. Pushing 12,000+ miles and loved every mile.

I actually got my Ducati in 06. '06 > '11 is five years of ownership give or take. I do not consider myself new to them, especially since I took that bike apart, studied it, repaired it, maintained it, and researched it, and rode the shit out of it more times than I can count. And never once did I complain about the stop marks on the steering tabs! I think in your effort to discredit me you missed my point entirely. If you've owned several since '99(happy for you BTW) and you still consider yourself new to them then OK. Do you ride your bikes?

I admit, I am new to riding. Been riding dirtbikes my whole life but never motorcycles. I guess I just never would have thought that it would be unthinkable to turn the handlebars completely to the right/left when maneuvering it into my shed.

Back on topic:

I'm guessing here, but, as was said by bikepilot, stop screw banging against painted metal is the industry norm.  I think this is the preferred method because if a protective cover failed (cracked and fell of) in use the steering could turn to far, possibly causing tank damage and personal injury.  No body sees that stop anyway.  A little dab of grease will keep the rust away.

One troll. The rest of us either jumped to your defence or gave an answer to your question.  You may not like the answer in some cases, but dont confuse that with the ignorant generalisations of a lone Trolling contributor.
