Full Front Fairing for Monster
«
on:
July 06, 2011, 09:28:56 AM »
Has anyone seen any examples of a full front fairing for the late-model Monsters? I have a 2009 1100S.
I just returned from Alaska where I rented a BMW R1200GS and toured the state. After the ride, I thought two things: 1 - I rather would have done that trip on my Ducati! and 2 - It sure was nice to have a windshield and heated grips.
So, am I blaspheming the Monster brand by considering a full front fairing, sportbike style?
Thoughts?

Buy a second bike with a fairing.

you can fab almost any fairing to fit if you are handy.. the problem is the mount cage for the top part. monsters don't have a place for it on the yoke. also, faired bikes have the light held by the cage so it does not turn, monsters have the light mounted on the forks.
it can be done, and much easier if you are going for a track bike as then you can toss the light and gages.

Just the upper would be fine for me. I hadn't thought of the headlight...but I suppose it doesn't need to move with the bars after the mod...

The bikini fairing works well for me. Check here for ideas:

on my track Monster, I had a clamp made for the steering tube to bolt a fairing stay to. This was on a 1st gen Monster and I really didn't have to do much relocation of anything. I then bolted on a 748/996/998 SBK upper with a Zero Gravity high rise windscreen and I was good to go. Not sure what you'de have to do to make it work on a new gen bike....

oh hell yeah....but then again...the previous owner didn't have a stock headlight on it...he had fabbed up a Home Depot halogen Drop Light for a headlight and lost the turn signals and put a ridiculous speedo on it....but that is another story...
for front end lighting though, you can use stock SBK lighting with said fairings if you get all the necessary parts ( like I believe DaveR did a LONG long time ago) to go with the stock fairing stay.

If you want the plastic just for warmth it might be easier to buy warmer (or heated) riding gear.

Nah...I don't need it for the warmth. I think the ride on the BMW showed I have more endurance for longer rides if I have some protection from the wind.
Also, and I know this won't sit well with people, I've been a life-long sportbiker and the Monster is my first non-sportbike...and once of my favorite things about sportbikes is the look of the front fairing. I love everything about my Ducati EXCEPT the way it looks from the front...

This is my eventual ending for my project. I too want to do the clamp for the stock steering tube to mount the front end.
zooom-would love to see pics of your clamp.
I also am looking at in the mean time, adding an older monster fairing to the current layout.
the other options you can look at are the barracuda screen with is taller and is made for your bike. I've seen other taller ones for touring as well, do a search for 1100 or new monster wind screen in teh accessories and mods section.

Many don't at all agree with my style, but in general, from the get go, I have HATED the look of the new monsters. The headlight is way too "Battle Star Gallactica" (yes, I know I just dated myself) for me. Having had an 1100s all last weekend that we took in on trade, I learned that I hated the light output as much as the look....
Having said that, your goal changes the look of the entirely and I LOVE it! I hope you can build the fairing around lighting that actually works as well as looks good!
GOOD LUCK MAN! Can't wait to see what you come up with!
PS-Similar in style but producing far superior lighting would be the LSL Urban headlight conversion...one of my guys has it on his S4RS and it works great! Spiegler is a distributor for LSL....
