I can relate to your experiences...it was nearly 30 years between rides for me....man, motorcycles really changed a lot while I wasn't looking  Cool

I always wonder when folks say "that's too much bike for the street" why I see them every where seemingly at normal speed and looking good too I might add.  Standing out for how they look and not what the rider might be doing but I have to agree on your comment about what the right hand will allow.
