Why? Because the people who will buy an ST probably don't feel they need 11ty billion horsepower, and there aren't enough people with a raging hard-on for an air-cooled sport bike to justify a pure version (the reason it got canned in the first place). Maybe with hard bags, ABS, etc. as options.
I have a raging hard-on for an ST2, but I'm poorer than a church mouse. Well, a church mouse with an entry level Ducati.

Or they could decide to keep the 1199 as the pure SBK, produce a 1100 2V SS and see of it's (commercially) good enough the replace the 848 all together. The 848 is a bit too successful I think, in the sense that it cost probably almost as much as an 1199 at a lower selling price. A cheaper to produce 1100SS to replace the 848 would solve that. Heck if it doesn't work out they can always later still produce a 849. Given that the 1199 is the most expensive bike to develop Ducati has made up till now, I think this line of thought makes sense.

i've seen ST2s go for as little as 3 bills on craigslist.  plenty of them on CL nowadays.

it would be very interesting to see a 600cc class water cooled 4 valve. I think you'd be looking at about 80-85 hp and if you did it with a superlight bike.. well..

The 848 currently races against 600cc I4s in the supersport class (Daytona Sportbike according to DMG). What would a 600 cc water cooled twin race against?

i think after the way they are doing, they may not allow the 848 in the class again. it used to be the 600cc I4 vs the 750 V2, I am surprised they finally let the extra 100 cc's in.

I'm also surprised the 848 was allowed in with 600cc I4s.

Ducati's decision to totally disregard class rules (at the time, and still in WSS) always struck me as an acknowledgement that the 748/749 hadn't really been competitive. Like a kid taking his ball home because he's not winning the game.

ya - they are rare as rocking-horse shit in these parts, - haven't got the gumption (or cash)for a fly and ride (yet). I'd want to confirm it'll be comfy for the Mrs on weekend jaunts.

i MEANT to say a 600 cc class, and I was thinking a quatrovalvole version of the 696 engine, but I guess that's really a 700cc class.

Any idea why Ducati doesn't do a 4-valve air cooled motor...ala BMW or Guzzi? Is it a heat issue with the vertical cylinder? Seems they could get some more HP out of it that way.  Huh?

It's a good question.  I know they tried out the desmotre head on an aircooled monster.  Seems they could figure something out, but maybe it goes in line with the desmodue = simple idea?

I'd like to be able to rig up desmotre heads onto the SC when the day comes that I put high-comps in it.  I think that, combined with a modest displacement boost would be down-right silly.

ST3 heads are water-cooled, right?

And after this thought, I had a momentary pipe-dream about casting finned, air-cooled versions. Which sounds ridiculously intensive and/or expensive.

Yep.  Extremely low production (might not have ever truly made it past prototype stage) 3 valve, air cooled monster.
