Ducati Posts 61% Q2 Sales Increase in North America

"Ducati North America has posted its Q2 2011 sales figures, and business is apparently booming for the Italian company in the US, Mexican, and Canadian markets, as sales are up 61% in the second quarter of this year. Selling over 5,200 bikes to customers so far this year, Ducati North America’s year-to-date sales are also up an outstanding 63%. Helping drive the sales increases are the extremely popular Multistrada 1200 models and the new Diavel. Along with the already sales-topping Superbike 848 EVO and Monster 796, these models account for most of Ducati’s sales growth.
‘We are very satisfied with our half year results, which are an exceptional growth over 2010,” said Cristiano Silei, CEO of Ducati North America. “We are extremely excited about our potential for the rest of 2011 with the Monster 1100EVO joining our formidable product line-up as summer hits full swing. In light of this continued success we will be strengthening our organization for the 2012 model year.”
It’s unsurprising that Ducati’s more affordable motorcycles are selling in greater numbers than the previously more premium line-up, but the fact that the MTS1200 and Diavel are pushing sales is clearly a reinforcement to the brand extension Ducati has undergone over the past few years. With that kind of model mojo, it will be interesting to see if the brass in Bologna gets more confidence and tries to push the Italian brand further."

Oh where do I start?
So they CAN afford Rossi. Ditched SBK, and sales are up 60+%.
So make a flippin gas tank that won't warp for us with the Sport Classics, Mulitstradas, Streetfighters, S2Rs, S4Rs. . . . . .
Ugh.
On the up side, I guess that possibly means that production will stay in Italy instead of being shored off to SE Asia.

Yeah, Ducati is doing well.

Ducati increased their sales 61% in this quarter on the back of a fantastic range of new and updated motorcycles and a whole lot of self-improvement.

The name Ducati is known the world over. While the undisputed heavyweight champion of brand recognition is of course Harley-Davidson, Ducati is really working on improving its name. They are not doing it with "if you can read this, the pregnant dog fell off" t-shirts, but by making new and exciting bikes that people want, and in some cases, didn't know they want.

Ducati (and BMW Motorrad -
http://bmwmcmag.com/2011/04/first-quarter-sees-best-bmw-motorcycle-sales-in-history/
) both made the choice to continue to be aggressive in the face of the worldwide economic downturn, while the Japanese manufacturers hunkered down and tried to minimize losses. As smaller players in the market, these two (and KTM seems to be making a play as well, now that I think about it) had a lot of room for expansion in both market share and product line. In the face of the retreat by the big players from Japan, it's working very, very well.
While I suspect it'd be tougher going for Ducati and the rest if Yamaha, Honda and/or Suzuki were putting up serious resistance, I also don't think those three had much choice. They can't really excite people by moving into new product lines, because they're already there (except, I suppose, for the luxury adventure bike market here in the U.S.), and they're already burdened by the massive overhead that comes with supporting their dominant market share. Fighting off the challenge from the smaller builders would have opened big spigots of red ink.
Great play by the Ducati executives on a gamble that's paying off handsomely; it'll be interesting to see what they do to keep things fresh & interesting now that they're getting established outside their comfortable niche.

I have never seen that T shirt at an HD dealer.
Now, since money is rolling in they should fix the tanks.

I don't doubt this - my local dealers FB page posted like 6 sold bike in one day! One would think they were giving them away.

Sometimes those big jumps in sales need to be taken with a grain of salt. Pretty easy to do if the 2010 sales were off the charts bad.
