nope, that was the V rod engine.  He lost to a regular old 96 incher with "mods"

That's right, I lost this round, I'm sure we'll go for it again. This time I'll keep the revs up, 6500 and gooooo!
I'll also make sure there are no dogs around.  Wink

I got surprised by a heavily modded HD a couple of weeks ago. I was talking to the guy at a light, and then the light turned green. He got on it right away... I hesitated, then rolled the throttle. But instead of reeling him it, I was still surprised at how quick that thing was, that I missed the shift to second. Next time, gotta remember... Type A, alpha male, can't let this guy win.

Well yeah,  he got a good jump on me, I started to gain on him but it wasn't as quick as I thought it would be.
I'm sure if I continued I would have passed him.

FWIW a lot of Harleys are geared pretty low and they will tend to get a jump on a lot of sport bikes right off the line - but stick with em and you'll usually reel them in.

Sportsters are heavy at about 500-600 lbs, but you'll come across a HEAVILY modified one from time-to-time (which may look just like the rest of them), but with 1250cc jugs, cams, additional headwork etc can actually be pushing more than 100 hp to the rear wheel.

But they are the exceptions, not the norm.

5k rpm isn't enough, downshift twice.  No need for a low-geared HD (and they aren't geared that low, they just make their power at lower rpms) to get the jump on a high-revving sport bike (which a 2v duc really isn't) - the sport bike rider just has to know what to do with the clutch and shifter.  Keep the motor near its power peak and I suspect you'll be able to outrun the HD, though to be honest both the HD and the 2 valve monster are pretty slow as far as bikes go.  A stock 600cc sport bike would leave you both for dead.  NOS might be fun  Evil

Actually YES, some of the are.

Yes, they do make power down low (a reading from the book of Duh), but many of them are ALSO geared low, specifically domestic production 883s and XR1200/XR1200X models.

It's not uncommon for them to launch better and stay ahead for about 1/8 of a mile.

But most sportbikes will outrun them by the 1/4.
