Anyone using a bicycle computer?

Has anyone had success using a bicycle computer for speed & odometer on their DUCS?  I've been reading that the SIGMA brand is one of the better ones as they can read pretty high up in speed (200km/hr +).  My headlight configuration is restricting me to install the speedo cable.

Sigma works GREAT. You can even programme in your ODO reading. It is FAR more accurate than the stock clocks.

Watch the mounting at both the bars and the fork. Bicycle handlebars are 26mm and 31.8mm. Some speedo's come with plastic non-flexible brackets for both sizes, which limits bar mounting. More common now are zip ties and rubber pads that allow multiple mount points on both fork and bar. Some have cheesy rubber o-rings that work like rubber bands. I stay away from those -they're a pain to mount and the rubber stretches, cracks and breaks in short time.

The wheel magnet is designed to clamp onto spokes by a screw. I'm guessing you'd need to grind off the threaded post and glue the magnet somewhere on your wheel where it can pass close enough to the sensor. My Polar speedo magnet (on my bicycle) has to pass within about an 1/8th of an inch of the sensor to register, so mounting everything can be difficult.

Random thoughts: 1) wireless is convenient, but interferance can be a pain.  Mine stops registering movement (speed and distance) for a minute whenever I pass certain train tracks. 2) when the battery dies, you will need to recalibrate everything and your odometer will zero unless it has a memory chip to avoid this. 3) MTB speedos are generally designed more sturdy than road oriented speedos. 4) You'll probably want bigger buttons assuming you wear gloves.  5) I haven't seen too many that are backlit and backlighting will obviously cut into battery life.


If there's a Performance bicycle shop in your neck of the woods, they have a bunch on display so you can play with them and get a feel for how they work.

How fast does it register?  Is it backlit?

No but I wish it was backlit. Most of the time they are backlit, it's a small button you press on the back. Usually it'll only illuminate for a set amount of seconds. Nothing like an on/off switch since they do run off watch batteries.

I think it goes up to triples digits but sadly I haven't taken it up past 95mph
