If I remove my stock pipes and just leave the x pipe on my bike would that be bad for the engine at all?  I have heard that having pipes to short can be bad for the engine.  I realize this will make my bike rediculously loud and faster.  That latter being the most desired result.  I am from WI so being louder than some Harley's would also be entertaining.

And if it is bad for the engine, how long of pipes would I need to avoid any engine troubles?

And when ever posting tech type questions it helps to let folks know the model of your bike. From your phrasing I'm guessing it's some version on DSS monster.. but that's a guess or possibly a 696

Thanks for the info carbon 14.  I have 2000 m750.

Does straight piping a car raise the HP?  That's what I was basing my assumption off of.

There's straight pipes and there's straight pipes - not all things named the same are created equal.

A few folks have run a DSS monster like yours or mine without any sort of can/muffler/end on their headers and general reports are the bike runs worse. It'll make a lot more noise but idles irregularly and runs roughly.

If you want more power from the bike... it's possible. Getting a more free flow exhaust, or removing (coring) the stock exhaust can yield a bit. To take full advantage of that you want more air and fuel coming in. That means something like a K&N air filter (more air) and adjusting the carbs or more likely a new jet kit for the carbs to supply more fuel to the mix.

But - a carb'd 750 is never going to be a rocket ship, so keep that in mind. But, if you're handy and have the tools you can core and chop the stock cans for free which gives you a much more bass note to the exhaust.

Most of the restriction is in the OEM crossover on the DSS Monsters.

I took my carbed M750 without the cans out for a quick ride to home depot after I misplaced a nut for the bracket. It sounded really, really bad and ran like crap.

I ran my 2006 S2R 1000 with just an udder for a day or so.  It was loud.  It ran kinda crappy, was certainly not faster.
Definitely won't hurt anything but your ears.

If you made your asshole bigger could you eat more brats?  JK, I'm a WI escapee.

If you take the cans off your bike will probably idle rough and there will be some stumbling at different RPM's.

I nominate this as the best anal-ogy on this board ever.

THIS.

You can dremel the crossover and weld plates onto the sides if you want less restriction, there is a guy on ebay who does this as a service (in Germany).  You'll still need to retune the carbs though.

Took the cans off my 97 m7fiddy to clean them up and get the road nastiness off of them. I then (unwisely) decided to run to the store before putting them back on.
Not only was the performance noticibly crappy, I was pulled over almost IMMEDIATELY by the local constabulation for what Deputy Barnes referred to as "not only modified, but completely absent exhaust".

So, running without cans is:
a) loud and obnoxious
b) a good way to shave off some HP
c) illegal and attracts even more negative attention

DON'T DO IT!!!
