So can we all just agree to disagree on the relative appropriateness of ethnic slurs? [roll]

Careful.  You might offend the one redneck hillbilly Ducati owner on these boards. [laugh]

What I do have a problem with, is someone telling me that the word has decended into humor, or that people don't find it offensive anymore.

That was pretty much my only gripe, but some people can never be wrong.

You are calling me a noob? I find that offensive. :P :P

I am assuming that you are saying this in jest. Because you (being a caucasian) have no idea what it is like to live with racial slurs in America. You can hide, whereas others who have non-American physical features, cannot. So have a cold one on me, and I will join you. [drink]

obviously in jest...

but your assumption is wrong.  I was 1 of 8 white boys in my middle school and high school class.  I can assure you it was pretty hard to hide in a sea of brothers.  I'm not sure why you think white people can't be the victims of racism.

What is an American physical feature?   ;)

Hangover is no excuse. Don't be a quitter!  [cheeky] Just kidding.

But seriously, when it comes to living with racial issues, being caucasian does not carry a whole lot of stigma, other than being a hater. While you personally may have been in the minority, unless you dressed like and acted like trailer park trash, you were not equated with the problems of society. When I was growing up, it was around the end of the US involvement in Vietnam, so there was a lot of anti oh-wry-ennal sentiment, and people would blame me (a three year old kid) for thing that happened to someone they knew. African Americans were blamed for the decline of society and for poverty in the south. Today asians are still hated by most Americans, but not to their faces. The term "made in China" has a negative connotation regardless whether a product has good quality or not. And the thing is that there is no escape. I hear the same made in China stuff all over the country. And while I am not Chinese (nor Japanese, nor Korean, nor Taiwanese), I am still dragged into that stereotype mercilessly by "lesser civilized" people. There is no escape, other than an attitude adjustment on my part.

So, please don't try to equate being in the numeric minority to living with stigma. The pressures are very different. It is one thing to be castigated for looking different, it is entirely different to be hated for being who you are.

btw - Great "diversity" picture. I've had to sit through many sessions where we are supposed to embrace the African American and Latino (Central and Southern American) cultures. But I was never allowed to share anything about my Asian heritage... because diversity is not about Asians, it's only about certain "minority" groups.

I'll push it down a little more.

What state are these rednecks from? It looks like something from heehaw.
My mother-in-law is an Okie and she says eyetalian.
We live in an area that has a large Mexican population and when we first moved here, we asked our neighbor for a restaurant recommendation. He asked, "do you like Spanish food?"
He didn't mean Spanish, he meant Mexican - somehow he thought saying Mexican was some kind of slur.

V, something that I think is important to point out. How many Asians can you pick out of the crowd in your picture. How many African Americans can you pick out? How many Italians can you pick out?

Hmm... hard to say. Like I said before, certain ethic groups can hide in a crowd.
