DAGO is an old derogatory term for Italians.  Either that or "wop."

Both have declined into humor due to age.

Try being named Vinny, from New Jersey... in Louisiana.  I can assure you that neither word has "declined into humor."

are you eyetalian?

my point was really that it's not all that offensive anymore..  unlike other ethnic slurs..i.e. the "N" word, etc

and my point was that in certain situations it is still offensive...

I'm guessing that your decision to not answer my question confirms that you are not a dago, but I'm glad that owning a bunch of Italian bikes makes you an authority on the subject  waytogo

nope, i am not italian.  but i do have references:

http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/dago

Quote
Usage notes
The sense has become less pejorative in recent years, with people of Spanish or Portuguese origin themselves adopting the term.
Usually a sailor or deckhand. "diego" is the Portuguese nickname for any deckhand and "jack" is the British equivalent.[Citation needed]

However, unless a person was born in Italy, they aren't Italian, Jersey Shore notwithstanding.  "Italian" is not an ethnicity, it's a nationality. Those folks in Jersey who call themselves Italians are no more Italian than (former Secretary of Defense) William Cohen is Jewish.

and yes besides owning a bunch of Italian bikes, Io parlo italiano, and we've spend fall in Sardegna for the last 11 years.

The thread on my local forum also went into discussion about the slur.

Again taken from the local forum:

Slur = not funny.
Rest of the Video = funny.

Moving on.

People can be offended by whatever they want to.

I don't use the term for any reason, I learned plenty of slang in Italian which is far more effective.

E 'un mucchio di cazzata per mio..  So stop breaking my cogliones...

This discussion is almost as funny as the video.
I profess that I am an authority on this matter.  Although not eyetalian in any genealogical way; I married a one.  I love pasta, red sauce, braciole, and a good guinea red.  All my friends are eyetalian.  I own a fine Italian sport bike and used to own a Lancia.  Last but not least, I have to put up with all my Brooklyn guinea in-laws poking fun at my Irish/German heritage.  We all have fun with it though.  So all you dago, guinea, wop, greaseball, ginzos can put your pride in your pocket and laugh with us drunk, potato lovin krauts.
chug

By the way, if owing a bunch of Italian bikes doesn't make you an authority on something, then its just plain cool. waytogo
