I like it.  It reminds me of what you would see a couple old farmers doing and saying around here.  They like mechanical stuff, and need to study anything they don't know about.

the cite needed was for the second bullet.

you can be upset if you want to, you have my permission.  if you need a hanky, shoot me your address and i'll get you one.  no hard feelings.

Is that a tactic they taught you in law school?  To make arguments that are irrelevant to the matter at hand then call to question my emotional state to hide your defeat?

Fact is you are wrong.  Reread your link- Etymology 2

What does the fact that "the sense has become less pejorative in recent years, with people of Spanish or Portuguese origin" have to do with people of "Italian descent?"

Vindingo I have nothing against you wanting to think what you want to.  I have observed the term "dago" to no longer be offensive and you believe it still is.  I promise not to call you one.  The whole thing was brought up by the fellows in the video using it.

That's all I have to say, I'm going over to my "hairpiece" thread

Ducatiz...

While you may have "observed" the term to no longer be offensive, to those of us who are of Italian descent it still is.

You can observe all you want, but since you're not the one the slur is being directed at, you have no real understanding of what it's like.

The word "Kraut" or "Jap" or "Chink" might not seem like a big deal, but I doubt someone of German, Japanese, or Chinese origin would take very kindly to be called that.

Vindingo, myself, and possibly other forum members find it offensive.

That should be enough of a reason for you to drop your argument.

FWIW

Video was from an acquaintance on Wildguzzi (that's where he first posted it).

This first generation Irish-American and second-generation Italian-American could give two craps about the terms Mic or Dago or Wop or whatever.

I don't personally believe they were ever as bad as "N"

I say get over it, be proud of who you are and don't worry about the labels others put on it.

And honestly, IF you are going to bother handing the power over to someone else about how YOU feel, then AT LEAST give some thought to how THEY MEAN IT - i.e. do they MEAN offense, was it supposed to be pejorative, or are they just modern day Archie Bunkers?

I find it interesting to note that no-one at Wildguzzi (and there are a lot of Italian-Americans there) seemed to be offended.

I guess I should clarify then...

While I don't like the term "Dago", I understand that the men in the vid probably grew up using that terminology, and most likely aren't using it to be degrading.  In a different context it would be more offensive.

What I do have a problem with, is someone telling me that the word has decended into humor, or that people don't find it offensive anymore.

If someone says, "Hey, I'm offended by that", no matter what they're offended by, the other person should just say, "oops, my bad" and not feel the need to defend their position with unsubstantiated Wiki quotes and name calling.

Someone said that they found it offensive.  The other person should have just dropped it.

Well, personally I think it HAS devolved into humor.

And I still think people who get offended by it should GET OVER IT. That's MY opinion and you can feel free to disagree (which I ASSume/drink  drink that you will).

Truthfully there are so many more things in the world to worry about than ethnic terms and some people just seem to go out of their way to find offense, so I'm a little numb to it.

Of course, I also have a zero tolerence policy on zero tolerence  laughingdp

Really funny video  laughingdp

And for those getting all up in arms about the word Dago you all need to take a chill pill.  I'm 100% German and have been jokingly called a Nazi on numerous occasions but I don't sit there and puff my chest out and let it get to me.  Take it in stride and move on it is not a big deal there are much bigger problems in life besides the words coming out of someones mouth.

Those guys are too funny, again I was dieing  Cheesy

IBTL

and i have to agree with bacon junkie on this.  if it offends someone, just drop it and everyone can be on their merry way.

and kev, thats a pretty self centered way of looking at the world.  you seem to state that just because it's a ethnic slur people should get over it because it doesnt bother you.  on the other hand, that should mean that if someone else said something about say your wife, family e.g. (and i dont mean this in anyway, this is pure example) if someone on this board said your wife was a whore, your daughter a slut and then found it funny and that really offended you, you should "GET OVER IT" because it didnt bother them.

in general, i find that people who brush aside ethnic comments tend to be those that mostly have not ever had those comments used upon them in anger and to truly degrade/insult the target in question.

all that being said, the video is still funny, but arguments over ethnic comments arent :\

Wow... this thread has really gone downhill.

in general, i find that people who brush aside ethnic comments tend to be those that mostly have not ever had those comments used upon them in anger and to truly degrade/insult the target in question.
I have to respectfully disagree with your assertion. I grew up in the US being called jap, nip, chink, chew wang, and various derogatory derivatives (and yes, got into a LOT of fist fights as a result). When I was ten years old, those racial slurs hurt my feelings... but I have since grown up.
