S*R Swingarm
«

Quick question to any of you who might have changed the rear shock on an S*R bike before: Does the bolt (17) that secures the rear shock (19) and adjustment linkage (11) thread into the swingarm itself, or does it thread into the bushing (18)? I'm trying to strip down my swing arm to get it powder coated, but that damn bolt will not budge. Tried everything from a 2 foot cheater bar on a 1/2" ratchet to a 350ft-lb impact wrench and I just cant get it to go. If it does screw into the bushing and not the swingarm, then I will just drill off the head and punch it out with a drift. If it screws into the swingarm... well make the beast with two backs.

Thats what it looks like.. but 18 doesn't have anything you can grab onto from the outside... it has a plastic/rubber cover that is attached to it, but no where to put a wrench. Manual says to loosen #17... but #17 is stuck tighter than a catholic school girl.

Yup. I've taken it off 3 times now. 17 loosens. If it ain't loosening, I dunno. Is the weight off the rear shock somehow? It does not screw into the swingarm, that bushing is what secures it.

Good to know. I think it must just be corroded or something. Since it doesn't actually screw into the swing arm, I should be able to drill off the head and punch the remains of 17 out the other side with 18. Then it should be easier to get the two to seperate with some penetrating oil, and just get a new #17.

Catholic girls you say
I haven't done this myself, but no bad words were spoken by the mechanic who did it for me, so your issue could be a seized # 17.
If that comes off, I guess 18 must be punched out....
W40-drench # 17 and leave it overnight?

Whatever happens... at least it was a good excuse to buy an impact wrench

Make sure you can get part#17 before taking destructive action.

Did you remove the top bolt from the shock?

The entire rear suspension assembly is off of the bike. I literally have a swingarm in my vice with a shock and an adjusting link stuck on it.

Try some penetrating oil on the left side of the bottom joint of the link, that's where the threaded end of #18 is.

Thanks for all the help guys. Finally got the bugger taken apart.
Drilling out the bolt proved to be a challenge... it was eating TiN coated bits for lunch. Seriously, the bolt must be some kind of super steel. Finally got it after I ordered a Tungsten Carbide "peanut" grinder with a 6" shank.
Once the rest of the bolt was punched out the other side, it turned out that the threaded portion unscrewed just fine. The head of the bolt was locked up with the swing arm.
Now, it's onto blasting and powder coating!
