Both awesome bikes no question but the 848 EVO would be all I need and realisitically want. 1198 would be overkill for me, and probably for 90% of street riders. Still, the performance is there if you need it.
Some great color options on the EVO too.

Hell, the 848 is way more bike than 90+% of street riders can actually use. The main advantage the 1198 has, a very wide torque range (not that the 848 is any slouch in the torque dept, the 1198 will just have more everywhere in the RPM range). Torque is what you want in a street bike IMO.

The 1198 for the dry clutch. The Evo if you don't care about all that rattle goodness.

848 EVO for me please!
5'9ish, 150+ some pounds. EVO is enough, I saw one at Local Club racetrack I visit here and fell in love. The bike sounds like it is not working at all, but that could have been the rider as well, super smooth! I would definitely have one for track only use.

I'd much rather have the 1198 thanks. The Evo just doesn't have the "hit" that I need from a Ducati SBK.

I picked up my '05 999 for $5,000. (in '05 they put the "S" motor from '04 in the base model
)
Out of pocket, after selling my Monster, including a 2,000 mile round trip to pick it up in 'Burque, buying Duck-Stew, Dusty, and SacDuc fish-n-chips and cheeseburgers at a pregnant dogin' Irish Pub (the waitresses wore these tiny little plaid skirts and garters
), was $2,500... (salvage title)
It's biposto, 140 hp, looks and sounds like nothing else out there.
You'd never know it was wrecked. Near perfect.
Best part is, I got it inspected by Cali DMV and they gave me a
clean title
for it!
Oh, wait... sorry for the threadjack...

848evo, perfect street bike that can go to the track and rip shit up.
1198, perfect for pulling hard in the straights and slamming on the brakes in corners (where the 848evo will probably catch you and sail past)
dont get me wrong. The 1198 is an amazing bike but for us mortals the extra power is just that, extra. 848evo is very capable, you will not be dissappointed.
also, 999

I just switched from a M695 to a 848 EVO and as everybody says it's more than enough for the street. I haven't been to the track yet, but I think it 'l be great there too. What I wanted is more torque, better brakes, and different ergos. It has it all but the brakes are awesome (even a bit more than I bargained for to be honest).
A 1098 or 1198 would be just too much. I was doubting between a 848(EVO) or a 999; when I did a demo ride I was not impressed with the torque of the bike, but I bought the Termi slipons (ECU not installed yet) and now I'm happy. I can't understand that just the slip-ons make such a difference (or was there something wrong with the demo bike, I don't know).
