If you've got a buddy to help, you can use the side stand as a lever and lean the bike on the front wheel.  Works in a pinch.  Jump to the 5:05 mark in this Keith Code vid:

"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the air—these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

Roll Eyes bad idea I guess, scratch that.

dont feel too bad.
worse idea is lubing the chain with the bike in gear and turning the rear wheel

You have a premium motorcycle.  Invest $70 in a welded tube rear stand.

Levering the bike around on the sidestand can crack the engine case (as was mentioned earlier) and you really don't want that.

Jacking the bike up from below is likely going to involve contact with the case or header pipe beneath the bike (am I right?).  Also not a good idea since you may cause the bike to tip, crack the case or tweak the exhaust.

I know rolling the bike around while lubing or cleaning the chain isn't convenient, but until you get a rear stand it's better than causing possible damage.

useless for SSS

(rear wheel stand would be better....)

quite a good option as can use it forever on any bike and good for long distance travel

i dont care if you have been a mechanic for 10 years doing something for a long time does not make you good at it, take my gf for an example shes been walking for 28 years and still manages to fall over all the time.

Front and rear stand, all in one

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/120766857818?

$53 shipped

I have two now and I have zero problems.  They are not heavy like the bulldog but they do the job for a much lower price.

yeah, but if youre spending that kind of money.....get the correct stand!

I used (not an engine lift) but an overhead beam before I bought a stand, so I know what thats like.  chug

When I bought the one I have now (used to use the hoist in my dads shop), I weighed the pros and cons of buying a set of stands vs a hoist.  The hoist allows for everything from a complete rebuild to oiling the chain.  Only thing a hoist doesn't do that a stand does, is storage.

if you put the pipe through the axle while its on the side stand and adjust the right jackstand to fit, then you can lever the whole bike up by the pipe and slide the left jackstand under.  works for the front too  Grin

...of course this is ideal for cleaning and lubing...not very practical if you need to take the tire off....

...and sorry all you HD guys out there...you need hollow axles for this trick laughingdp

How does that work with a SSS?

I'm gonna need pics to see what you mean.

My mind is just jogging through images of a raw pipe on painted metal, flaking off the original surface.  Owch.

Through the axle.  No paint normally in there....
