Monster 800 Dark i.e? What's so special??

Can anyone please explain the difference between a i.e and any other monster (older models ofcourse). If my memory serves me right I believe it was an 800 Dark i.e. can someone explain pros and cons (I was told it was a rare one).

AFAIK all 800s were i.e. models. Dark was a lower tier trim line. They didn't have some of the nice farkles of some of the other trim lines and were usually most notable for lacking a gloss clear coat.

Thanks for the 411, and to think that I was soooo close to dropping the cash on a strip-down model.

new they were a couple hundred bucks less than the 'standard'. Not sure about the 800 - but I know that Dark 620:

- Had flat paint
- Didn't come with bikini or tail fairing
- had bar risers and clamp cast as part of the triple. Standard the riser was a separate piece.

So, the difference wasn't dramatic - and the flat black metallic paint looked bad ass (some darks came in different colors like silver btw but were flat).

But yeah - not a rare model.

Matrix, Foggy, Caripex, 'S' versions of the various monsters are more rare. Also, 'Senna' color versions, while not limited edition models, are higher demand as the color scheme is bad ass.

this one I was looking at is an 800 i.e Silver Flat (a little tooooo flat for my taste and I would've ended up painting the tank or something), if it would've been flat black then that's a different story just because it's an 800, but other than that it sounds like it's a little more work to mod the handle bars for example. I want clip on and I would have to do some serious grinding off of the risers. I think it sits a about an inch lower too no? and the seller was trying to pitch the bike to me as rare.
It did have front and rear fenders tho, but it needed some work.
I think I won't be riding until next summer

Thanks for the clarifications there SP, I appreciate the info. You can rest assured that next summer I will be unvailing my Monster before and after pix I might pick one up during the winter and mod it during the winter break, I no ride on the snow, I did it a few times and never more! hahaha!

For the great price, they're great bikes.  Leaves it open to whatever changes you want.  I spent $90 on Ebay and found a spring kit that made a huge difference.

Could the fuel tank be upgraded since it has a smaller one?

And another thing, could the tripletree be swapped out when it comes time to put some clip ons on instead of grinding off the risers?

This is a my matte silver 620 Dark with dual front disc's, 800's were identical, but the obvious engine size.  A lot less matte silver Dark's out there than the matte black.  I actually preffered the matte silver because at the time most Darks I saw were matte black.
Yep a little cheaper, no windscreen, or seat cowl.  Did not care for the screen anyway but did get a used seat cowl for $40.
I liked the black frame on the the Dark compared to others.

As for modding it's really not that big of a deal, grinding risers off and a little clean up.
Homemade mods are the bomb and make the Dark look great: (If you like the really naked look)
(Just a few bucks in some materials or left over materials, dremel cutting wheels, a few fasteners, and rattle can paint)
