Huh?! Did I read it right?
«

As I search the Internet for my next bike, well...let me rephrase that, my Ducati monster I stumbled apon another Ducati forum and while browsing their classified post I read one that the guy wanted to trade his 749 for an s2r 1000 and he was getting a handful ppl interested.
Now I am boggled! Did I read the replies right?! Ppl were willing to part with their S2R 1000 bad ass bike to go down to a 749? I don't understand...please explain cause here I am going up to an 800, I won't go backwards to a 600 and one thing is for sure...I wouldn't trade my S2R 1000 beast to go down (if I had one of those beasts resting in my garage).
I just don't know, am I missing something?! SMH

i think that you mean is why would someone go down from a literbike to a 749 right? if that's so, then it's because you're comparing a 1000cc aircooled 2v engine vs a 749 watercooled 4v engine. power is the same between the two, and some people are probably interested in moving to a sportbike/track toy. and the 749 guy is prob just tired of having a sbk and wants something a bit more relaxed.
it's not a apples to apples comparison if you're just looking at engine size.

Ayup... There's more to consider than just displacement. As thought said, the 749 is a sport bike and fills a different niche than the S2R.

AND, the 749 is great bike too! Just enough motor in a great chassis.

Yeh.
The 749 / 999 bikes might not be the most beautiful, but they certainly did their share as competent track tools. After owning a 748 for some time I'd wager it was one of the best bikes to hold a line through corners. You just cannot shake it, and I'd guess the 749s were the same.
The reason I ended up selling the 748 was that it either wanted to be kicked in the pants or nailed on its nose. It just was not a relaxed afternoon riding bike. So I'd guess the responses you're seeing echo those sensibilities.

That's crazy! I so would've thought completely the opposite, so the 1000 it's a more relaxed bike compared to the more aggressive 749 did I understand that right?! And the 749 can keep up w a 1000? Please correct me if I'm wrong.
It kind of sounds like if I was to go with my 800 I eventually can look to trade up with someone with an 1000 bike, unless its not the same for the 800. Do I make any sense?

I have a feeling you are riding with the wrong crowd and you have a completely wrong mindset of what motorcycling is about.

In think you are still misunderstanding. They are not saying a M800 is better than an S2R 1000, they are saying a 748 (completely different engine, 4 valve as stated) offers comparable performance (at least HP wise) to the 1000. Not to mention the 748 is equipped with better suspension, geometry etc. It is a sport bike, the S2R is not.

Again, the two bikes are completely different animals.
The 749 is a mid-sized super bike and has a very committed riding position compared to the monster. Also, as stated above, the liquid cooled 4V motor has a completely different power characteristics to the 2V air cooled motor of the moster. The 749 will also handle MUCH better when pushed to the edge than the monster will, due to better suspension, brakes and chasis.

Hahaha! I feel like a total d!ck hahaha! Fist I forgot that the forum was not a Monsters only forum so when he mentioned to trade from a 749 to an S2R1k I thought it was a Monsters for Monster. So that's where I was way off and now it all makes sense now. Now I can see how he would go to an S2R from a 749 and visaversa. I was thinking "Monster" and that it all this time that's why you heard me mention something about 800 before because that's what I want a Monster M800 or even a M900 (I thought that all this time he ment a Monster 749 *I don't even know if they exist*). So thanks guys for clarifying this.

i was just about to post pics like that too... haha
keep in mind that there is also the monster s4r which is a 1000cc 4v watercooled engine. that makes a lot more power than s2r 1000.
i suggest reading up more on the monster lines before making your purchase.
and to maybe make it totally clear...
duc 749 = (not a true comparison here but it's somewhat similar) suzuki gsxr 750
monster s2r 1000 = (same as above) suzuki sv1000
totally different bikes, different needs, different engine sizes, but the gsxr will probably wreck the sv1000 in almost all performance data even though it's a smaller engine.

That GSXR 750 will walk all over a 749 power wise. It's not anywhere near as nice of a bike (IMO), but it's got a MUCH stronger motor. Same thing goes for the SV1000. That thing puts out a lot more power than a DS1000.

yeah, but i meant it as a comparison of 749 vs s2r1000 = gsxr750 vs sv1000. or gsxr600 if you want to put the power closer to a 749. more about how they're just different bikes.

Hence the reason why I want to stay in the 800 range and nothing under it. I've had my share of sport bikes (3 of them to be exact). This time I want beefier but not too beefier where I would compromise performance at the twisties. I will say that I inlove with the SSA but it's not a deal breaker after seeing what they can look like once modded and I am sure that a heart transplant (engine swap) can be possible. I just thought that since there is a 600 monster it was the same for the 749 aka what some call just a "750" and therefore assumed it was a Monster.
