Riding without a tach

When I started riding recently and bought my bike, I was surprised there was no tach or gear indicator.  I got used to it quickly (the engine sound makes it pretty obvious), but the other day when two louder bikes were riding near me on the road, I realized I had no idea what gear I was in.  Is that something people get used to, or do most buy an aftermarket tach?  I'm mildly concerned as I'm about to try a track day and I'm guessing I won't be able to hear my engine.

You should be able to hear your motor fine with earplugs in...

I had a '99 M750 with no tach.  As hard as you'll be getting on the throttle at the track, I wouldn't worry...  Also, it's impossible to over-rev the 750 motor.  It will run out of breath before getting into the danger zone, rev-wise. 

The bike will tell you when it's time to shift.... the more you ride it, the more you will feel it.

My 75 Suzuki has a digital readout of what gear it is in between the tach and the speedometer.  It is the only bike I've owned with one and it is kind of neat I guess.  I have to put a tach on everything, probably don't need one but I like the extra information.

my girlfriends suzy also has one. it IS nice. but not necessary.

My M900 had no tach, wasn't a big deal.

Ear plugs should solve your issue.
