Of course I would plan to disassemble the head for blasting if i am going to use glass but since soda is water soluble, it would seem that I don't need to, just rinse it out and then blow the water out and re-lube.

anyone?

I should have mentioned I am doing this in my driveway, so I'm limited to the tools I have...

Soda is pretty slow going. I'd dis-assemble and use glass or grit if I was planning on painting.

I'd do it with no dis-assembly if I decided to use soda.

soda doesnt work too well on the paint, not unless its already ready to come off. youll be wasting a few hundred pounds to do it right.

Soda works great for getting the munge off of old carbs and anything of bare unpainted aluminum without harming rubber seals or plastic parts. It will not remove paint. Bear in mind it's like sand & the beach. It will get everywhere including places you think it won't. Tedious masking off of verboten nooks & crannies would help. After blasting, you may want to plan on submerging the entire part in hot water & swish it around liberally, then WD40 it to death to displace the water. If it were me I'd have no problem soda blasting heads with no disassembly. If it will work fine on carbs with which I have experience doing with no ill effect, I see no reason it won't work with cylinder heads.

Your neighbors will hate you however, as you will dust the whole hood with white silt by the time you're finished. Better to get it done right before a predicted rain.

I find that Dr.Pepper works best for soda-blasting. Make sure you use a 2 liter bottle and shake it up really good. That'll ensure good velocity of the media.  Grin

my neighbor next to me is an asshole.  a stupid one too.  i told him a tree was going to fall on his house and he ought to get rid of it.  he was like naah..  6 months later.. a big rain...  foof...  missed his house by about a hair, but destroyed his trailer of kayaks.

i'll do it on his side of the yard.
