One of our dogs had to be "retrained" when we moved last time...guess he didn't realize the new house was the same rules as the old house.

Anyways...we'd take him outside and let him play, and when he came inside...he went in his crate. Leave him there for a couple hours, take him outside and he'd go to the bathroom. We'd bring him in to play for a while (supervised), the back in the crate while we were doing other stuff and he wasn't supervised. Then outside to bathroom and play, then inside supervised, then crate when unsupervised...etc etc etc...

Took about a weekend, and he was back on the plan. No issues since then. He just had to relearn what home was. Other dog had no issues.

The most important part of the crate is that they don't think it's punishment. Our dogs sleep in theirs at night, so it's a "safe place"

This approach seems to work for us. I think you comming home is probably a big part of the change, but I'm sure they'll adjust fine.

Good luck!

I bought a one year old dog that had lived in a kennel and didn't understand the whole house training thing. I train compete my dogs in sport.

With the older dog if he had an accident I would intervene and take him directly outside to his 'area' by the collar. Not violenty but calmly and instruct him to do his business. When he would do it outside there was praise and tug.

If your problem is systemic I would start restricting their access in the house to only the areas you are in. This makes catching them in the act a lot easier. If you miss it there really is no point bringing them back to the scene of the crime and punishing them though you may really want to. I am a firm believer that there is a place for compulsion in dog training but this is not one of those places.

As others have said don't let them free feed and get them on a routine!

All these are good points and are much appreciated.  I think we are making progress as of the birth of this thread.  I did forget a thing or two while I was over there.  Thanks guys!

Warning: this post contains no value.

Why don't I send you my dog.  He loves poop!  Your dogs poop and he disposes it.

You know, its funny you had this...actually, really funny. I have a black lab as well and for some reason, he just loves to lick my doberman's crack!  Its the strangest!
