Desmo Watch

If it weren't so tiny I would have bought this. The ETA movement it uses is pretty much the industry standard for an auto, but 36mm x 42mm is too small for my watch tastes. That is about the size of an old school timex lets say. It is pretty sporty.

Perfect! I am in the market for a new watch so I just ordered one. It's a little small so it will go well with my small p*&^$ (I mean wrist).

One just sold on eBay for $201.00. I was tempted ($200 is a great price for an ETA auto with sapphire crystal), but I have enough watches.

I've had 2 watches which used ETA movements, and they both developed faults. My Omega went back to the shop twice. My TAG packed up altogether. Needless to say, I now have a Rolex, which, after 5 years, is totally reliable.

I'm with you, mickeyvee. My Tag packed in about two months after the warranty expired, and they absolutely refused to stand behind it even though they determined it was a manufacturing defect. They wanted an obscene amount of money for a new movement for it, so I packed the watch in and found another manufacturer to throw money at. I'd rather spend a few grand for a tried-and-true Oyster than a few hundred for another suspect TAG movement.
So much for quality in a name, huh?

No, I don't have a phone. And if I did, I would still wear my watch. If you don't understand why, then I can't explain it to you. Either way, it's no big deal. You're either a watch person, or you aren't.

I think it's a generational thing. I don't always have my phone, but I
always
wear a watch.
On the other hand, there are young(er) people today who have never worn watch and see no reason to - as Justin said, they always have their phone with them, so why bother.
I find it appealing wearing something mechanical on my wrist that serves a purpose - watches are definitely a form of art.
I have never had an issue with an ETA movement, though I find their accuracy can vary quite a bit. Then again, I don't wear a mechanical watch for accuracy.

My Submariner loses about 10 seconds a week. Plenty accurate enough for an automatic movement, and more than accurate enough for my needs. And yes, a Casio would do the job, but that would be like riding a Honda 175 instead of a Monster 1100 Evo!

So you can gauge my generational response better, I'm 35. I wore watches when I was younger, pre-cell phone, but don't anymore. I think watches are more of a fashion accessory than a functional tool. I think everyone here feels the same way. Otherwise this thread wouldn't have so many high $$ watch brands listed. I don't see anyone talking about their swatch watch.

They are both. They are functional art; wearing a nice mechanical watch is like riding a Ducati.

Which movements failed? I've a Valjoux 7750 driving a Sinn 356 UTC DA/SA and it's +/- 2 sec./day for the last 5 years. ETA owns Valjoux now.

Tissot makes great watches and my wife and i love ours but my Rolex is 43 years old and only one trip to the Rolex office for "cleaning" which set me back a cool grand.

I don't have a phone...
or a watch.
