God I hate HOA's.  Hateful, shitty things. 

I lived in HOA communities in the Phoenix area.  The first house..I didn't care much for the HOA.  Unfortunately, 2 homes later..we ended up with that same HOA and their rules had gotten worse!   

ONE good thing about HOA's though, the neighbors stucko home won't be painted purple with orange trim  or have a 10'x10' treehouse in the frontyard!  Both, of which, were in the neighboring communities who didn't have HOA's.   

I know all too well about the housing madness he was talking about too!!  People camping out to get their name in a lottery to get a plot.      Ridiculous!  Now it's a REAL sh*tty mess down there.  I'm glad we got out of that place!

Our neighbor's house is kind of a chartreuse with purple trim, with sayings neatly printed on many walls (from our kitchen window, we read every morning "Ever notice that 'what the hell' is always the right decision?"), across the street the house is a vivid salmon color with orange & sage trim, with Moroccan motifs panted on the doors & window trim.

We need to paint ours, and we're leaning toward something in the blue/lavender range -- probably not quite as electric as our dear neighbors, but not the usual muted shade of beige, either. I'm taking a break right now from working on the garden fence at the front of the house, which is made up of bicycle wheels & two frames (painted a bright blue) for the gate. I really like how it's turning out...

As you can imagine, I'm not a huge fan of HOAs...
