Welcome Graeme,
If you are purchasing a fuel injected Monster then yes you will need a red key. The reason being that its the master key for your immobilizer and you need it to get other keys cut and programmed if you lose yours. The red key should also be accompanied by a code card too.
Most reliable place in Brissy I use for my Monster is Speedys Motorcycles at Sumner Park. Scott is an ex Ducati dealership mechanic and knows what he is doing. They also do lots of aftermarket upgrades if you want and even have a dyno at the back of the shop.

Can someone correct me if I am wrong (I've never needed to know) ... but can't you buy an ECU (or re-map your existing one) mapped without the immobiliser function? Would this circumnavigate the problem (at the loss of the immobiliser)?
I'm sure the information is on here somewhere I just don't want to risk taking something out of context and influencing a buying decision.

Welcome Graeme.
I bought my S2R without a red key or card, I got a couple of extra keys cut at a local locksmith who had a keyreader thingamajig. I always take two with me and leave one at home. Then a year or so later when I got a race ecu I had a choice of keeping the immobiliser as is or getting it um well immobilised.
ps Graeme, some members here speak highly of the 796. cheers.

Thankyou all for you input.
I ended up buying a '95 M900.
Not red, but in really good condition and low Ks. I may paint it red, maybe.
I'll get a good photo of it and post it up.
I'll have to check Speedys out.

Hey All
I am based in Hobart Tasmania and am the VERY proud owner of a 2010 Monster 1100. Her name is "Bella".
I bought Bella secondhand (sight unseen) and it was worth the gamble. She is a beaut. Stock standard with only the tiniest stone chip on the exhaust heat shield. Well the "stand-ness" didn't last long and she is know vastly different in many ways. Not unlike Alfa Romeo's, these bike come with their share of niggly issues, buts its what makes us so passionate about them.
I am business owner and really just enjoy getting away from the stress and out onto the amazing Tasmania roads, stretching her legs and just enjoying some of the amazing scenery.
I look forward to catching up with some of soon.
Cheers

Welcome aboard and congratulations on the new bike. Hopefully you can inspire the guys down in Hobart to get together again ... I reckon it's been a while. Unfortunately the numbers keep diminishing.

I'm pretty sure Speedys don't touch carbed bikes. Double check with them though.

Howdy all,
Just renewed my licence after an 18yr hiatus, feels great to be back in the saddle. I have had a lot of people ask 'why?' and I tell them that 'You know that feeling you get when you're away camping and you've had a big night on the sauce, you wake up in the morning and take a dip in the river, that instant rush of freshness and exhilaration - that's the same rush that I feel every time I ride'.
I'm in Adelaide and the very proud new owner of an '05 620ie. Congrats everyone on this forum, it has already helped me out and I look forward to being able to offer advice and stories in return, cheers!

Hi ,
I just bought a 659 with the tail tidy kit and Termis.
2 years old and had 1400km on the clock. 3 weeks later it now has over 3,000km
Havent ridden for 30 years, never ridden on the road before, never owned a bike before. Absolutely loving this thing!
