Going in for my first maintenance (640 miles) tomorrow 2011 796

Finally made it to 600 miles last week. Taking my bike in tomorrow for the checkup. Back when I just got my bike I was thinking of getting the the 14 t sprocket but now I'm getting used to running my bike over 4k rpm. What the average percentage of owners that get the 14 t ?

Of those with new Monsters on this forum, I'd guess unscientifically ~ 70% - 80%. The others don't know what they are missing.
It's a really cheap and DNA approved mod; if you hate it, no biggie. (I'd be shocked if you didn't like it, particularly in traffic where YOU live!)
If you leave the exhaust, ECU and intake stock, you'll need to keep it over 4,000 RPM anyway. You'll just be able to go slower doing it and 6th becomes an almost useable gear on the Interstate whereas with a 15T at 4,000 you'll already be illegal.

I had a 14T installed on my 796 during my 12 month service, and it was both inexpensive and worthwhile.

Firstly, an 848 is a 4-valve with different characteristics. Secondly, the gearing is a bit different, no?

The dealer at the shop recommended I keep the stock sprocket a little longer and see if I still want to change it after 1000 miles. Seems like I'm getting used to it but it's still a bit annoying in traffic. Thanks for the advice guys! Now that I can rev her higher maybe I can stay in 1st gear when riding in 10 mph traffic

Lazy dealer?
When I came back from my test ride and told my dealer, (ex-racer, owner, shop foreman, chief wrench), how overgeared the bike was and that it needed to drop a tooth, he said, "True..., which is the reason that's the most common mod on Monsters".
So, why do YOU think DP sells a 14T? (Most people fit a "Driven" or other 'cause it's cheaper.) This is a DNA-approved swap.
There is no reason for you to spend $10K+ and "live with" something which is only there to get past EC ride-by sound testing.
Maybe you need a real dealer. This is my 9th Ducati. Two needed this swap out the door. Seven didn't. If the bike won't pull redline in 6th, gear it down!

whats an 848 got to do with a 2010 streetfighter S?
changing gear ratios has a simialr affect across all engine types. I would say it is more noticable on the higher displacement 4 valves as those are generally the ones that struggle with low gear, low rpm situations the most...

Missed the "S" in his signature line.

Even less reason to do a 14T IMO.
Obviously our mileage varies. My 851 had no need to lose a tooth.

regardless of S, 848 street fighter doesn't come out for a few months yet...
why would that be even less reason to do a 14t?

Never had any trouble crawling with the 851. Fairly smooth, even at low revs and no jerking. You ride a 4V? I would expect any 4V to be equally smoother than a 2V.

I own a 2v but ride 4V's often. I find that regardless of what motor, all (current) Ducati's benefit from the 14t in urban environments. I also find that the more power a bike makes the more useful the 14t is (in stop and go traffic) and that it has even less of a negative impact as the more powerful bikes top end is already ridiculous.

I've got the stock gearing in my sf and I really cant see any reason to drop down to a 14t. It's just gobs of torque and power everywhere, making it revvier would make it too crazy i think. Most sf owners that post on ducati.ms only seem to drop down a size if they have issues with the 4k rpm dead spot it seems.
though i guess if you really were stuck in stop and go traffic for over 75% of your riding, a 14t might be a good idea. but then again, you're prob riding the wrong bike if that's the normal state of affairs for your riding.

I waited one year then changed to the 14t. It was like falling in love all over again. If you ride mostly in town or in stop and go traffic or just like the lower end torque for getting off the line quicker, do it.
Ciao!
