Author Topic: Cat-less Headers with Long Baffles?  (Read 3674 times)

I’m fishing for some advice on running a cat eliminator header with baffles inside for my 09 S2R 1000.  It’s still in the theoretical stage, so feel free to tell me I’m an idiot if this won’t work. 

If you look at the ebay pic of the headers, you will see the short pipe has a bend fairly close to the end of the pipe.  Would it mess anything up if I put the baffle in the vertical pipe?  That puts it really close to the engine will that cause any back-pressure issues?  Should I just try to bend the baffle?

The end goal is more aesthetic than performance based.  I like the open rear wheel look with the SSS.  I'm currently running udder only with a belly pan, but I'd like to go for a cleaner look.  I'd also like to not go deaf or get a bunch of noise pollution tickets.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

it shouldn't make any difference where you put the baffles as long as it's behind the crossover tube.
it's not a race bike. you need some back pressure since the ECU is tuned for the cat.
change out the cat pipe first before you decide because you're going to be surprised how loud it is.
you'll probably need an ECU reflash, too.

Once you take the udder off it will be loud, even with a baffle installed.

The slip on is a stubby Termi and with or without the baffle it's obscenely loud.

I had the same aesthetic goal when I did mine, and it works for me. It's a lot louder than I had hoped for but the udder is so hideous! Lesser of the two evils I guess.   Undecided

And as long as all you're changing is the mid pipe you won't need a reflash. If you have or will have any air box mods then you will need the reflash

If the baffles have to go behind the crossover then I might need shorter ones.  They will extend beyond the crossover and could get in the way of the exhaust flow too much.

The loudness might be the project killer on this one.  It looks like it will be a lot louder than the udder.  I was OK with a little louder, but I was hoping the longer baffles would mellow it a bit.

Duc750, I do like your exhaust setup.  It might blend in better painted with black ceramic/high-temp paint. 

I think that's what I'm going to try first on my udder and lower engine areas before this project.

That's ultimately my route. I need to have someone break and fix up the welds first. The slip on is supposed to be covered with a carbon sleeve so the welds are a little ugly.

About the noise...at idle it's not too loud but it's when the throttle is open to any degree that the trees give up root and run away!

I like the look of the open wheel too so I need to find some way to calm the noise.

The two baffles are only $16 shipped. If they are too long just cut them shorter. If the whole idea doesn't pan out just throw them away and try something else. That's part of the fun of owning one of these things.  cheeky

I also have an S2R1000, and have a catless midpipe on it. I have a Leo Vince slip on with the can chopped to about half the size. I also love the look of the clean tail and was thinking about possibly emailing the guy who makes Boomtubes about trying to get a pair of the baffles and tips that he uses so I can install them in my midpipe. You should contact him

I would also like to quite the Ye Old S2R I'm running Boom Tubes I like the open wheel like others have said. The noise is to much and I would like something a little less obnoxious was thinking of going back to a 2-1 and a cat-less mid or finding a way to put more baffling in the Booms.

Hey Novelo, that's an awesome bike!  Maybe you just need better earplugs  Grin.  The noise is why I was trying to figure out how to fit 8 inch baffles into my concept.   More baffle = quieter, but possibly too much backpressure. 
Back to your bike ( drool), I've heard Motocreations has a version of the boomtubes with different levels of baffling (is that a word?).  Does yours have any baffles at all?

Thanks I got a few things here and there I would like to do to just freshin it up a a bit its sitting at 20,000 miles now so its no garage queen like most that you see. These(Boom Tubes) pipes have about 6-7 inches of baffling in them but they might as well not have it. The loudness comes in handy if you want to piss someone off or let them know your there  cheeky. From what I've read so far with exhaust you need something that can absorb the energy from the sound waves and not create to much back pressure. I think a similar set up to the one I have with "bullet type" silencers instead of baffling might work well as a compromise. My idea is simliar to the GPR Deep Tone although I have don't know how it will sound. I would need to make or have made a different end pipe so I wouldn't need to modify my BoomTubes.

I also really like the look of the Zard Multistrada 1200 Exhaust and would like to find a way to retro fit or make something similar but the price of those things hurt.
