It's hard to tell from the photos, but the shorter edge where it fractured is starting to curve out just like the other side. Meaning it is symmetrical and not curved like the oil bypass spring in the photo.

I haven't noticed any differences in shifting. Also, I agree that it looks like the tooth of a gear, but the question is from where and how concerned do I need to be?

are there any round-toothed gears on the bike?  not in the gearbox for sure.

I am shocked it's magnetic.

"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the airâ€"these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

Some of the 800's have had issues with the clutch spring-damper hub coming apart.

I've not seen one of those clutches in quite a while, so I don't clearly remember what they look like.

M/SS800 or S2r800?

This is the one I remember:
S2R800 - http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=24411.0

M800 doesn't have the APTC clutch, so it *may* not have the spring damper arrangement.
Can't tell from the parts diagram.

That's why I asked.  M/SS800 has the same clutch as the M750, no dampers that I know of.

I'd say it looks like it broke from the gear on the right.  It is from the clutch/case fail thread Speeddog referenced.

I checked my S2R 800 dual mass primary gear - the picture does not show a part from it.

The oil bypass spring is stamped and pretty thin...or they always were.

It sure looks like the end of an oil bypass spring. Item #14 from pic below.

Isn't the gear on the right the crankshaft gear? And I'm no mechanic, but isn't it pretty beefy?

none of the gears have rounded teeth like that.  the top of the tooth on all the engine gears is flat and meshes with the opposing gear.  i have a gearbox at home in a box, i can take photos.
