It just whines but doesn't engage. It has been going out for a while, last weekend it finally crapped out. Plenty of juice in the battery, just took it off the charger.

The sprag is pretty expensive. There are some cheap fixes on the internet, or at least there were. One was cut a few coils on the spring to tighten things up. Another was a spring off some GM seal. Me, I would spend the bucks. I like doing things once.
