So I was wrenching on my '86 GTI this weekend. I love that car... except for the stuck fuel injectors. I broke the damn injector puller after getting 2 out of 4 out. On the third, the tool kept slipping off... looked close, and it looked like the fingers on the tool had gotten bent... looked closer, and the "bend" was actually a sizeable crack.
Thankfully it's only an $8 tool, so replacing it won't break the bank.
On the plus side, I do think I figured out the rough running and detonation. The injector bodies were filthy, indicating leakage around the "sealing" o-rings. That would mean vacuum leak (amongst other things), which would lead to crappy running. The nozzles themselves looked fine, no rust, so I'll cleaan off the exterior, install the new O-rings and seats, and see if that cures what ails it.
Next up: rebuild the transmission and add a Wavetrac limited-slip diff. This car is gonna be fun again.

The sheer amount of wildlife down here that has fought my pickup and lost is staggering. I could basically start a Southern Oregon Zoo of animal corpses.

Well that sounds cool. I rebuilt the Duo Valve in My Mercedes E 320 before going down to Houston. One of the brass valve seats had its plastic stem broken off and the valve was in there kind of sideways. That's why hot air was coming out of one some of the vents while others were blowing cold. So I drilled out the plastic in the top of the brass Valve and made new stems from Brass wire from a plate holder that I found at Home Depot, and used JB weld to cement them in. Now all the vents blow cold air which is good because its been in the High 90's and its like a sauna down here.

The quail here in Lakeview are really bad. They're a borderline problem. They don't believe in crossing at crosswalks, or bothering to fly. They just own the town.
