Header pipe options
«
on:
March 24, 2012, 02:07:05 AM »
Hi all,
Finally gave the bike a good clean up today after way too long. Something that's always disappointed me about my bike is the crappy looking header pipes. The carbon cans and the pipes attached to them look great but the header pipes have always looked dull and almost rusty.
Does anyone know of options for good stainless or titanium header pipes?
Cheers.

Maybe you could see what the price difference is between getting your header pipes either chromed or ceramic coated as opposed to buying new stainless pipes
good luck with it.

Staintune used to offer a big bore pipe in polished stainless for the early Monsters. Same shape and style as the oem, but a few mm bigger bore pipe with the crossover section opened up and given a smoother looking radius. Look alot like the FBF pipes Dub Luv is selling.
The staintunes appear beautifully made and finished too. They should still have the jigs.

Strip the whole system off, clean it up good and proper then get it ceramic coated.
Mine has staintune high mounts, I am about to do this with mine and get the whole lot (pipes and all) black ceramic coated. Should be ~$150 all done.

Hmm, I think I'm tempted to go the shiny look over the black ceramic coating.
Might get in touch with Staintune.
Cheers.

This works well if you want to go the cheap option. This method cleaned my rusty old header pipes up.

Speaking of which, do I need new exhaust flange seals if I remove the headers, or only if I damage the existing ones during removal?
Ignore the weird woman. She's an idiot. There doesn't appear to be a seal or gasket. There's a block that's welded to the end of the header, which seals against the head. Kinda hard to damage that.

there's a round metal covered fibre gasket at the head, generally hard to see. 037084005 .

I had mine ceramic coated silver. They were looking sad after a few years of use but came up good as new. Gave them to the coaters uncleaned. The options were Black or Silver. Silver was a lot cheaper and suited my bike more.
Cost about $200.00 for the headers and the mid pipe to get done. Took about one week.
I would not look at chroming the pipes. They will start to pit and rust.

That job with the WD40 looks really good for the price. I'm tempted to give it a go.
Brad, what is "mop n glo"?

I reckon so. It's probably got wax in it that will seal the outside of the pipe once applied.
I think I'll give it a go.
