should have done more research before i bought my a S4. Seams like everytime i get on here their someone with something wrong.  now everytime i ride it i think something else is wrong with it.... I i think i smell someting when the motor is running. Like its running too lean. Althought im no motor head have have no idea how to tell. If you rev it up, you can see some black smoke, and every 15 to 20 second at idel it bogs down for just a sec... So who knows...

Its a 2001 S4 with 9500 miles. Powerprogramer3, termis, open air box. Ive only had it for about 1200 miles.

thanks for the advice to start a thread Speeddog

Welcome.  Smiley

What kind of mpg are you getting?

Which map do you have in your PCIII?

MPG isnt too bad. I ride the bike pretty hard, and i have no idea what map is in it. it might be in the paper at home i got from the guy. Every thing was done before i got the bike.

You should be able to get low 40's mpg.

If you get/have the cable for the PCIII, and the 9v battery power supply, you can hook it up to a laptop or desktop and interrogate it for what map it has.
You may not need the power supply if it's a USB model PCIII, but I'm not sure.

you still need the power supply.

I have a bike with a very similar setup I could send my map if you wanted to try it.

I've got no problems with my S4 so don't Fret

Your description sounds like it is rich. the black smoke could be carbon . and the bogging down could be the bike loading up due to the overly rich mixture. does the bike have a open air box? if not remove the lid and tie the filter in place. take the bike for a ride and see if it is better (bike too rich) or much worse (wrong direction it is too lean).

If the prior owner babied the bike and ran high test fuel the motor will be carbon'd up , pick up some chevron techtron carbon cleaner and follow the directions on the bottle run a couple of tanks through and most of the carbon will be gone. Or .... sign up for a couple of track days and beat that thing. Evil

Don't even need to buy the techron bottles anymore.  The Chevron near me has techron in every grade of gas now.

I think BP is the other guy that has techron in their fuels. If you fill with them consistently, its the same as using the fuel trement system every now and then. If you cant find techron, try Sea Foam. Thats the best stuff in the world.

A little note: pour seafoam straight into the intake. of course little by little, all the carbon will burn right up and out your exahust pipe as white smoke.

Man no worries about the S4. Shit happens. Look at the blokes with new bike and they're stuff is messed up. A perfect bike doesn't exist (cough except BMW Dakars).

And the Sea Foam smells good when it burns up!

Oh, and it also sounds to me like you are running rich.

rode the bike to work today because i couldn't find my trucks keys.  ( little too much fun last night [drink)  we'll didn't noticed anything different on the way to work. But on the way home. home it seamed like i had a loss of power and now its bogging down really bad.  Cant really tell what the smell is.. Like i said, im not even close to a motor head. O and also after i get on it, and run up the RPMs as i'm slowing down theres a popping noise. Like its back firing... and ideas?

guessing you rode in with a colder temp out side than when you went home and the bike runs better when the air is cooler and more dense.

have the fuel injection looked at.

Which further makes it sound like he is running rich. Smooth running with cold, dense air to burn up all the extra fuel in there...

open airbox lid with K&N
Ducati stage 2 ECU

When i watch the line on the PC box, it goes 1 too 2 lines above the 0 on the fuel light. I dont have the manual.. and really have no idea what im doing. Im looking on the net to see if i can find something..

Do you guys know what i should to get the mix right???
