Not true. Have a look at GPR's website (also a rotary style damper). Lots of top-level road racers use their rotary dampers. Many of the guys I race with use Scotts or GPR as well, and while it's just club racing, it's way above and beyond what a street bike will ever see (forces may be the same, but the damper works a lot more often in racing than street riding). Rotary dampers work just as well as the rod type.
Looks is another issue, but that's personal. I had a GPR on my 848 and loved it. The side-mount rod-style dampers are as ugly as it gets.
