I hired a vet and he's beyond awesome.  So much so that after seeing numerous reports about guys coming back from the sand who can't find a job...

I'm heading down to the national guard station to make sure at least one doesn't have that problem.

Can't really speak to Nate's intentions, but he most likely knew that it was going to ultimately turn into a politicized shit storm of a thread.

Many people confuse Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and Armed Forces Day. Memorial Day is a day for remembering and honoring military personnel who died in the service of their country, particularly those who died in battle or as a result of wounds sustained in battle.

While those who died are also remembered, Veterans Day is the day set aside to thank and honor ALL those who served honorably in the military - in wartime or peacetime. In fact, Veterans Day is largely intended to thank LIVING veterans for their service, to acknowledge that their contributions to our national security are appreciated, and to underscore the fact that all those who served - not only those who died - have sacrificed and done their duty.

Then there is Armed Forces Day for celebration of Active Duty Military Members. President Harry S. Truman led the effort to establish a single holiday for citizens to come together and thank our military members for their patriotic service in support of our country. On August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force Days. The single day celebration stemmed from the unification of the Armed Forces under the Department of Defense.

I am a veteran and tend to celebrate all 3 together.

I remember every day and not just on Memorial Day.

I remember the childhood adventures I shared with neighborhood kids who went off to war and never returned.

I remember an immediate and decisive "I'll go" from a buddy in response to the need for an extra radioman on a patrol.  He never returned.

I  remember those guys who were oh so very good at what their country asked them to do, and did return; changed forever, to a country that had no place for them.

I don’t remember so well how to answer the question “Was it worth it?”  But I try every day to remember to do something extra to help make it so it was worthwhile.
