Probably a lateral move. Now if the forks are adjustable - they might be a good grab, though they need some TLC it seems.

If you can score a shock from a 2000 900S that would be choice or the aftermarket Ohlins version. The Factory one has a shorter remote line and a bracket to mount the reservoir near the top mount.
-Throttle's on the right, so are the brakes.  Good luck.

Given that situation, I'd remove the shock.

*Perhaps* with the shock out you may be able to persuade the screw back in without depressurizing.
