« on: June 18, 2012, 06:03:05 PM »

Finally got myself an HID headlight kit.  Tired of the old dull dim stock headlight bulb.  Would like to know where would be the best place to hide/mount the ballast on a '00 Monster?

Pics?

thanks!

depends if you have pods or airbox or open airbox

I have my ballast between the pods and the coils...people put it on top of the open airbox (on top of the air filter).

I've got an open airbox.  Top of the lid is cut open.  I thought of possibly using velcro to the inner side of the tank.  Only issue with that is everytime I lift my tank up, I'd probably have to unplug the ballast.  Sounds like a P.I.T.A

Yes that will be a pain in the ass...plus for those type of plugs i dont want to keep connect and disconnecting them...but how often do you need to lift your tank one may ask.

I think you will be perfectly fine with it on top of your open lid airbox.  Many or all of the guys have them on top of their airbox.

thanks for posting those pics Darkstar.  waytogo

I will try to mount it in the same location.  I had originally thought of putting it there also, but wanted to see if there was a more discreet location.  Ideally I wanted to stuff it all in the headlight bucket, but dont think there would be enough space or air ventilation.

Length of the "fancy" wires that lead to the bulb kinda limited my install options.

Modifying those high voltage wires is kinda iffy as I've seen slightly damaged and/or repaired sections arc through the insulator.

well after poking around and installing the kit lastnight, I ended up mounting the ballast to the bottom side of the airbox.  Very discreet and easliy allows the wires to be hidden and routed to the headlight.  Almost looks like it belongs there, but its not that visible.

How's the beam pattern?  I would love an HID, but have heard mixed reviews of them being any better than a halogen out of the stock bucket.

All I can say is night and day difference.  I've got a 6000K HID bulb kit in there, and the light output is amazing.  My entire road ahead and to the sides is lit up at night.  The stock bulb absolutely sucked.  At times I was second guessing if my light was on, thats how dim it was.  I will never go back to stock.

Money well spent and I wouldnt hesitate doing it.
