sketchy
«

I spotted a neighbor with a dirty but whole s4r (maybe S, has ohlins forks) that he was trying to push start, gave up and hid it behind the bushes. I don't want to jump to conclusions, but I live in an area most would call sketchy. I'm going to go talk to him about it and ask what the story is, but lets just say its out of place. Black tank with gray stripe, didn't get a good look at it other than the gold forks, SSS, and radiator up front. Lemme know if anyone knows of one missing or sold one recently, I'll post back once I have a chance to talk to him. I sort of feel crappy assuming it was acquired illicitly but that is a serious piece of hardware.

Screw talking to the neighbor.
Go get the VIN number, and post it on here to see if anyone here had a bike stolen with that VIN, and then call the cops, and say you saw someone stash a bike in the bushes, and things didn't seem like they were on the up and up.
Then they will come, look up the VIN, and determine if it was stolen.
A person who owns a bike legitimately doesn't stuff it into the bushes when they can't get it started.
They put it back into their garage, or in a parking spot.

Well if i lived here without a garage, I'd hide that thing behind bushes too. I'm waiting for signs of life over there.

just go and check the handle bars. if they are locked, then obvious he locked it and has the key and probably owns it. unless the thing is bent out of shape nad wont lock.

I would do exactly what Bladecutter is advising. From the VIN they can identify and call the owner (assuming the bike has title). Worst case scenario is the police lost a little time

+1 on the Cops....its their job! If its his bike, he will have the title/registration to prove it. He should thank you for looking out for him and the bike.
You go over there with any chance it is not legit and start asking questions....you have compromised yourself and put yourself in a bad situation.
Call the Police!

Called the popo, seems legit. Guess I am guilty of the whole profiling thing in my neighborhood. Well if this thread can be locked or deleted I'll feel less guilty with a public record of it, but whatever, just trying to do the right thing. If it stays where it is it will end up stolen though, or at least roughed up.

You're not guilty of profiling. You're guilty of caring more about Ducs then this guy who left it in a bush.

its not profiling (and even if it was, that's not necessarily bad). You saw something suspicious occur - namely a person being unable to start a high-end/luxury motorcycle and deciding to ditch it in the bushes. Absolutely suspicious and calling the authorities to investigate was the proper action.

If it was my bike I would say thank you.
Many years ago I was walking back to my apartment I was walking back to my apartment with my car radio. A police cruiser stopped to check out the situation. I thanked them.

Not sure about the current situation in rhode island, but in
The late 80's I had a cop try to sell me a radio out of the trunk of
His squad car (providence).

That sounds about right for the 80s, the crooked ones have moved up to trafficking drugs these days. I guess now I get to go ask the guy (if I ever see him around) how much he wants for it, or offer to store it in my garage.
