Author Topic: For those who installed aftermarket exhausts  (Read 1755 times)

What do you do with the originals?  When I dropped my new one in the dealer lot, I got a quote back to fix my 696, a new Ducati muffler was $1100.  If I put a newer exhaust on it, can I sell the originals?

You can sell them or save them until you are ready to get rid of the bike.
Put the stock back on and sell the aftermarket.  You won't get your money back on most aftermarket parts so many people return their bikes to close to stock before selling and just sell the after market goodies separately.

What MikeZ said.

Ducati charges top (exorbitant) dollar for their new stuff. In reality, you'll find new take-offs on e-bay all day long for far less.  I got a perfect set of barely used stock cans on e-bay for $75. Aftermarket cans are worth far more sold separately.

I sold my OEM exhaust to a rider who low sided and cosmetically damaged his. He wasn't interested in going with an aftermarket pipe. I'm not planning to selling or trade my bike...ever.

I sell everything I take off my bike unless I think I might be putting it back on. I use the money to fund more purchases for my bike. I typically do first dibs here for less then list them on fleabay for a tad more if they dont sell here. OEM parts go quick and easy for the most part.

You can sell the originals - they are yours, no one else has any claim to them. Just don't expect to get much for them or expect them to sell quickly.

There's a long history of (minor) damage to the stock exhausts funding the purchase of aftermarket exhausts after a tip or low speed get off.

As you've noticed, the OEM, not very desirable cans have a very high replacement parts cost. A single can on older monsters was about $800 to purchase a replacement from Ducati. 1 stock heavy ugly can was $800.

So when an insurance check arrived most folks opt to use to get aftermarket exhausts. Depending on the brand the costs out of pocket would be low to 0. Or if you have a bit of patience you can hunt down OEM cans on ebay or here for a small fraction of that replacement cost from ducati. Referring back to the older monsters, it's common it see a pair of the cans with little to no miles on them for $50-100. So roughly 3-7% the cost for a pair from Ducati.

Any take off parts, be they from mods and mechanically fine or damaged due to whatever are yours. This includes items like spark plugs even. Now most folks don't want items like plugs back (duh) but other items do have value. There's a long history of original functional, but cosmetically damaged parts wandering off when a bike goes in for repair and not getting back to the owner.

And you don't even want to know about the decent of vultures when a totaled bike with nice bits comes in...

 laughingdp  When I asked if I can sell the current cans, I was asking if it was worth trying to.  Obviously not the best choice of words.  I can't believe Ducati wants $1100 for ONE replacement can.  I realize stupidity should be painful, but that's ridiculous.  I'm going to keep the stock ones on for now, I'll upgrade later at some point.

To simply answer your question.
You won't get anything reasonable for selling your stock cans, but getting rid of them can cost you more money if you damage the aftermarket and need replacement. OR if your state decides to put on noise restriction inspections, you'll need the stock for inspections.

I keep as much stock stuff as I can.

Worth it only if you don't have the space... when you replace 'em with something moar bettah!

Plenty of stock bits do retain decent value - body, rear sets, suspension blah blah. But cans are an albatros!
