ECU Reflash not Possible...

I sent my bike's ecu (2002 Monster 620 Dark) to get reflashed and just got a call saying mine can't be reflashed if it doesn't have a switch on the clutch activator (wiring similar to the brake light switch) as some 2002 and all later models have. What was mentioned in the conversation was that I could either find that pin in the wiring harness which has been left blank and ground it for the ecu to "think" the clutch switch is activated, or swap in a wiring harness from any 620/695 post 2003.

So, my question is, does anyone know what pin is used for this clutch switch on later model monsters so I can ground it? I've tried finding a wiring diagram for later model bikes but only have mine. Or, should I just wait until the reflashed unit comes in and poke and prod?

According to my diagram 12, 13, and 14 are the unused pins. I was slightly confused, it's a pin to the ecu which i need to ground. Any help with the wiring on the ecu connectors?

So I managed to track down a 695 wiring diagram (which was also ok'd to be swapped out completely), and have found that the clutch mircoswitch is attached to BODY 33 Pin. So new question, is one side of the ecu connectors BODY and the other ENGINE?

There are two connectors on the top of the ECU. The one at the front of the bike when the ECU is mounted up is the engine connector - it hooks up to the injectors, coils, crankcase sensor etc. The one towards the back of the bike is the body connector - it connects to the gauges, sidestand switch, etc.

The issue you're having isn't that an ECU reflash isn't possible - it's simply that the firmware that they have available to them will make the ECU harder for you to use.

I wrote some words on my experiences with ECU connectors here:

They're annoying, and I haven't been able to find replacement terminals. The closest I've found is whole connector sets, from the UK:

But they're very expensive. Much as I hate to say this, the cheapest option for you is likely to be to find a loom from a wrecked later 620, 695, or S2R.

According to what I was told on the phone, the main difference which I needed to take care of for the bike to start was to ground the pin for the clutch microswitch that goes to the ecu. Supposedly, other customers had either ground the pin or swapped wiring harnesses.

According to your link, I could then take apart the connector and stick a wire into the empty socket and run that to ground, IF I'm understanding everything correctly. IF that is a correct assumption, is there a process to inserting a wire and securing other that stuffing one in and pouring glue on it? I'm wanting to avoid a full harness swap if possible.

Here's a diagram of what I'm using as a basis for the pin grounding. https://www.flickr.com/photos/dthorn/7606178326/#in/photostream

The issue here isn't putting the pin in place (I'm sure you could just stick it in the hole in the ECU connector and all would be well). It's getting the terminal in the first place without buying either a whole connector set or a loom.

Ok, I think I understand. Well I'm getting a set of gauges this weekend and the guy is throwing in a harness so I'll just update everything at the same time.

Thanks!

Do not make it more difficult then it is.
Just ground the body 33 pin with whatever you have.
It is always good to download the owners manual at

For most models the electrical diagram is included at the end.
For M620ie 2002 you can easily spot the difference  620/750 versus 900

It is possible to bypass the ECU's safe start features completely, and still be able to keep the safe start features with wiring/switch trickery without cutting into the main harness...maybe splicing into it though.

Can you tell me where you sent your ECU for reflash? My bike won't start possibly because of immobilizer and I am trying to find a place to reflash my 2004 620dm.

Hope your issue gets resolved.  I wish I had any knowledge on that front to share.
620M 2004 Dark i.e.; ~ 57K miles (all me);  Looking to swap out engine now.
Triumph Speed Triple 2006 (now ~ 44K miles bought @ 4K miles on 04/2010)
Honda Grom 2015 ~ 3500miles so far.  Love this lil bike

I have to bypass at the harness because my bike did not come with the clutch microswitch which is the only extra safety feature which effects some 2002 models.

I had my ecu reflashed by Houston Superbikes, and they called and asked me to verify whether or not I had the switch, then told me what my options were and warned that if I still got it flashed I'd have a little more work ahead of me. This should basically not be a problem for any 2003 or later.

I won't get my ecu back til Tuesday, and I'll be on vacation for a week.  :(

Finally installed today and everything works perfectly. I added a wire to BODY pin 33 and ran it directly to the negative on the terminal, to test it and it started and ran smooth.

Thanks for all your help.

Got the bike started . .  a mix of PIN33 and someone else before me trying to mend an issue . . . side stand safety was "showing OK" but, once I bypassed it, bike started, took wire coming from PIN33 of bike, NO start, took bypass wire from connector, NO start, if either one of those was NOT ON, bike would not start . . . Now, to finish assembling all CF parts and re do TPS . . .
