rear shock suggestions
«

After 55k miles I've finally decided it's time to upgrade the rear shock on the 01 900ie. I don't want to spend a huge amount but don't want to cheap out either. I'm curious to know what members here think of penske vs. ohlins and would appreciate any suggestions including any good experiences any people have had with particular distributors.
Thanks very much.

Penske and Ohlins are both good.
Penske is a little more 'racer' oriented, so easier to work on, change preload, etc..
I got my Ohlins from Kyle Racing, very easy transaction.
Penske I think you can get direct, or through Traxxion (others too, I suspect).

I bought a paioli on ebay.de ,it's quite an expensieve brand (Used on Bimota's)
Paid less than a 100€ for a new shock and it's very good

I was reminded of this thread a couple of weeks ago as I walked down pit lane at the WSB races in SLC. Anyone want to take a WAG as to how many teams use shocks OTHER than Ohlins?
To be fair, the shocks that you and I can buy from Ohlins are probably not a lot different than shocks from Penske, HyperPro, Paoli, etc. But the fact remains: there is Ohlins, and then there is everybody else.

hey, I'm not knocking ohlins one bit... the best is the best. but the majority of us are not WSB budget racers.
for my level of street riding, would the difference mean a world of difference? probably not. will my wallet feel the difference? you bet.

+1 I'm not going to buy a racing type shock like that with more adjustments than my watch. Sure it's the best of the best, but there's no way I could use it tp it's potential. Hell, I haven't even used the factory shock to it's potential yet - on OR off the track. I'd rather stick to the middle of the road kind of shock myself. Like teddy said, my pockets aren't THAT deep for what I'll gain from it.
