Hey all
I am in the market for a new bike. I am tired of wrenching on my '72 Honda that I have now. I have been riding for about 5 years. My previous rides were a Yamaha Radian 600 and a Yamaha R6.
I am looking at a new Monster 696...(due to price). I am short so I need something with a low saddle... preferably under 31".
Is it worth the extra dough to get a new bike.... or would a used larger displacement bike be a better bet?
I am in my mid 40s ... I don't need something really fire-breathing. I am sure the 696 has more than enough power to keep me entertained.
From what you describe, the 696 should work for you. Or at least, it sounds like your needs for a bike are similar to mine, and you couldn't pay me enough to part with the 696. I am in my mid 40's, (with a family) so going 170 just doesn't appeal to me like it used to. The 696 doesn't have the top end like an R6 but the low end torque will keep you in smiles all day long. Going from zero to suburban speeds is a complete blast.
The handling is every bit as good as any other sport bike, so the twisties will not be a problem. But for me, the 696 is as much a daily driver as it is a weekend bike. So ergonomics and in-traffic maneuvering are very important.
I am also shorter than "average" height... with a 28 inch inseam. With the Ducati sport seat (which is about an inch lower than the stock seat) and riding shoes, I can just about touch both heels without stretching. While shopping around for a bike, salespeople kept telling me that a lower seat is only for beginners... I've been riding since age 8' and have no desire to wiggle and squirm my butt around at every intersection, trying to get good footing, while looking like a complete jackass because I put my foot in a pothole. I will believe the seat height propaganda when I see taller people raising their bikes to get on their "tippy-toes".
When it comes to styling, I prefer the 696 to its bigger brothers.... again my preference only YMMV... but I like the symmetry of the 2 sided swing arm and the twin exhaust pipes. That being said, if Ducati offered a symmetric 796 or 1100 with a lower seat, I may have considered getting one of those.
