Can boring out a 50mm to a 53mm diameter for SBK forks be done safely?  Looks like there wont be much material left after its done.  Does anyone have before and after pictures or first hand experience with this?

Attached is the clamp in question.

thanks

yes, i think you might of measured 3mm of the edge, its actually 1.5mm since 1.5 off the radius = 3mm diameter. 3mm would be pretty scary to take off.

duhhh.... I wasnt thinking straight.  I was measuring 3mm from the edge.  Didnt seem like much left.

so 1.5mm is structurally safe?  No scary stories from anyone?

It's been done before...you'll get differing opinions about the relative wisdom of the mod.

I've never heard a scary story.

I got mine done here out in Hamilton at a local machine shop.

It's a fairly big shop that only does large order stuff, but the guy was really cool and told me to leave it with him for a couple days and he would do a program for it and fit it in. Two days later I stopped by and he charged me a case of hieneken.

Here is a shim kit for the lower triples so you can use 54mm forks:

Bored out my top triple for a 749/999 swap.
I have about 500 miles of hard city riding and have had no problems.
Make sure you do it right (fill the pinch joint, tighten screws, make sure original bore measures 50mm, use boring tool, etc etc)

so use a shim, tighten pinch bolts until I have a 50mm diameter, then bore out to 53mm.

got it!  I'm sure my local machinist can handle that.  Should be easy peasy japanesy.
