carb question
«
on:
June 30, 2008, 07:30:31 PM »
I have an 01 m750 w/ arrow slip on's & open airbox.
I am having a little bit of trouble in the 3-4000 rpm range. It is very sluggish and misfire's if I try and cruise in that range. sometime's, not all the time, as I accelarate through that range it does it also. I know for a fact that she is running rich. is this a carb problem?
I also should mention that I do have a minor, minor oil leak at the base of vertical cylinder. it is the gasket on the back end of the engine. Could that be causing a loss of compression.
Other then in the 3-400range she really rides beautiful and I would like it if it was smooth all the way through. I do some city driving it it alsowas make's me dread going at a slow steady pace. any Advice will help. If it does turn out to be the carbs that would be an easy fix if it is because of the richness. I don't know. please help.....

Was it re-jetted when you opened the box? How many miles ago?
Dude, you can't go around with a leaky Ducati
I have the same moto and would be willing to assist you with it and replace the gasket if you like, have garage, have stands, tools, all that nuts. Or take it to Cheshire Motorsports or Motorcorsa.

Even though a ninja 250 is way different than a monster, I had some issues last year with my carbs that are similar to yours.
I'd say try cleaning them really well, those jets are pretty teeny. If that doesn't do it, like Billy said, try re jetting them and opening up the holes a bit. How many carbs does a 750 have? You can get a sync tool to make sure they are syncing correctly.
I'm not very mechanical, I'm just offering up what we tried last year on my bike. If all else fails, Cheshire will take care of you.

I'm not sure if you mean the cylinder base gasket is leaking, but if it is and is causing an air leak that'll definitely cause a sluggish throttle, and midway through your RPM range (about what you're describing) is when a carb has a naturally leaner mixture, which could explain the missing. I'd be curious how you determined that it was rich, if other than smelling the exhaust. I'd assume that opening the airbox would lean you out rather than richen you up. I'd say you were too lean if it's running hotter than before the airbox removal. Could get a good indication by taking a look at the spark plugs. Maybe check if the carb vent hoses somehow became plugged?
A good douche job and perhaps re-jetting should get you on the right track. If that oil leak is the cylinder base gasket, definitely get that replaced. Billy up there is a pimp and will probably accept payment in microbrew.

Carbs? You want less carbs and more protein.

Hey
I'm in the NW, a newbie and have the exact same two problems with exact same bike. I just rode here (Portland) from Boulder, CO and know that the jetting problem is probably due to the altitude change. I'm not positive but I'm pretty sure that the leak is from the gasket as I tucked the breather hose up and out of the way (pretty sure about this).
I want to work on both of these things but have never looked inside a carb before and have no idea what I'm doing but would rather not pay someone else to do it because I would like to learn something.
The gasket also is beyond me so if anyone would be willing to help me, I would be happy to pay someone in cases of microbrew, or most things else really besides heaps of cash (some would not be a problem).
Anyways, new to the area and the bike, would like to meet some other riders.

Yes welcome!
Buy your parts, a jet kit, AKG pugs, wires, a tampon for the seepage, whatever you think. I have the same bike and the shop manuals so I'd assist any of both of you if you want. You can bring your sisters over too
anyone can.

I don't know if it has been re jetted. I'm the 3rd owner and the previous one had no clue. I'm guessing it does since the air box had already been opened and Slip-on Arrow exhaust installed when I bought it. But I shouldn't assume anything. I am going to get the factory pro Jet kit this weekend and install, i want to take them out and clean them so i might as well, Right.
It is the gasket at the bottom of the vertical cylinder. One major question; Is it possible to take the cylinder off without removing the whole engine. if not then I'm screwed. At the moment the bike is my primary vehicle to work so it would have to be done over a weekend.

The spark plugs are showing a rich mixture. There not blistered but sooty. The vent hoses are intact. Also I have no problem supplying the Brewski's for some knowlege and know how on these two issue's I'm having. i would preferr it. I've cleaned the carbs before but a little intimadated about jetting the thing. I'm afraid it will run like shit afterward.

Tailgunner, If you are willing to help out that would be great. PM me when your avaiable.
Julian, we should see if all our schedule's work out and do all at once so we don't waste to much time not riding. [moto]
My sister's are married but if you preferr hustler mag's rather then beer you got.
Thank you all for t he advice, I appreciate the help.

My bike is also my primary and only driver, so I'll probably have to wait for fall/winter for the gasket swap but we should definitely do jetting. Let me know when and where.
This sounds good. Lets drink some beer and work on bikes!
